The Lipstick-Face Demon is a recurring evil entity in the Insidious movies that brings terror and suspense with its dark powers every time it appears on the screen. Unlike the Sinister movies, which dive deep into the origins and mythological underpinnings of their central demonic character, the Insidious films intentionally avoid giving away too much information about their dark creatures to maintain an air of mystery and intrigue around them. However, the movies still drop subtle details, especially about the Lipstick-Face Demon, in each installment, allowing audiences to speculate their origins and the nature of his powers.

In its five installments, the Insidious movie franchise features a diverse set of supernatural creatures to chill and thrill audiences. While some, like the Doll Girl, are relatively harmless and pose little to no threat to the main characters, others, like the Lipstick-Face Demon, serve as the main antagonists, casting an ominous shadow over the protagonists throughout the movie series. Since the Lipstick-Face Demon is instrumental to many terrifying storylines in the Insidious movies, it is hard not to wonder who plays him, where he comes from, and what kind of powers he possesses.

Who Is The Lipstick-Face Demon? Insidious Villain & Powers Explained

The Lipstick Demon roars at the camera in Insidious The Red Door

The Insidious movies present the Lipstick-face Demon as the overarching villain of the franchise. Although it is not explicitly mentioned, he is seemingly a representation of Satan, given how he rules The Further and tries luring others into entering the dark dimension. His exact origins in the movies remain unknown, but he was initially created as an angel to follow god's command. When he defied the word of god, he was punished and sent to The Further, a hollow dimension between Earth, Hell, and Heaven.

In Insidious' The Further, the Lipstick-Face Demon lives in a lair, where it enjoys sharpening its nails and listening to Tiny Tim's "Tip-Toe Through the Tulips" when he is not busy possessing and luring innocents like Dalton. Over the span of five Insidious movies, it is revealed that he possesses a myriad of abilities and powers. For instance, the first movie highlights how he can trap astral projections in his lair and can even possess children like Dalton with ease. He also has the ability to teleport from one dimension to another and holds control over everything that lies in The Further.

The Insidious movies have also shown that the Lipstick-Face Demon possesses telekinesis and often uses it to knock people off their feet or hurt them. Apart from that, he also has superhuman strength, allowing him to beat full-grown men like Josh with just one hit. In two different instances in the first Insidious movie, the Lipstick-Face Demon can also be seen merging with the shadows in Dalton's room and clinging to walls without any effort.

Although the Lipstick-Face Demon only serves as the main antagonist in the first Insidious film and Insidious: The Red Door, he remains a looming presence in all five films. The first Insidious movie introduces him in the scene where Renai hears a voice from the baby monitor. The voice presumably belongs to the demon, who conveys he wishes to take over Dalton's body. As the movie progresses, Dalton unknowingly goes too far into one of his astral projections and gets captured by the Lipstick-Faced Demon in The Further. Josh ultimately manages to free his son by visiting the demon's lair, but the Lipstick-Face Demon does not stop there.

The evil being only makes a brief appearance in Insidious Chapter 2 when Elise hears mysterious creaking sounds from behind Allison. Even in Insidious Chapter 3, the demon only appears towards the closing moments of the film when Elise returns home and finds her husband's sweater folded on the bed. With what follows, her dog suddenly starts barking as the demon emerges from behind a door. When Elise looks at the face, the demon suddenly spawns behind her, hinting at how it intends to haunt Elise and take her to his lair in the Further.

In Insidious: The Last Key, Elise traverses to the Lambert residence in her dreams and finds the Lipstick-Faced Demon right outside the window beside Dalton's bed. As soon as she wakes up from this dream, she receives a call from Loraine, asking her to investigate the Lambert home. Insidious: The Red Door marks the return of the demon where he sets out to possess Dalton again after a decade. However, Dalton and Josh ultimately shut him behind the red door after learning how Dalton's drawings are a conduit to control him.

The Lipstick-Face Demon's Different Names Explained

The red demon looks over his shoulder in Insidious

The Lipstick-Face Demon is also referred to as the Red-Faced Demon, the Man With Fire on His Face, Sixtass, or The Visitor in the Insidious films. While the origins of these names remain largely unknown, it is evidently called the Lipstick-Face Demon because of the red paint smeared on his face. Its red face and body, representing the demeanor of Satan, ultimately become its identifier, which explains why it is also called the Red-Faced Demon in the films.

The name "The Visitor" has its origins set in the first film, where Loraine recounts how she visited Dalton's room and felt that something was in there with him. She recalls that when she asked who was in the room, the being responded that it was "a visitor." The Lipstick-Face Demon is also called the Man With Fire on His Face because of his parallels with Satan and the similarities between the Further and Hell. While the Further is not a direct representation of hell in Insidious and serves more as a dark realm existing between worlds, the Lipstick-Face Demon is its dark, fiery ruler whose sole purpose is to watch others burn, explaining why the alternate name exists.

In all five Insidious movies, American composer and music producer Joseph Bishara plays the Lipstick-Face Demon. As an actor, Bishara has played demonic roles in several other horror movies, such as Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle, The Conjuring, and The Conjuring 2. He has also composed tracks for many renowned horror movies like The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, The Curse of La Llorona, and The Unholy, among others. In an interview (via Fangoria), Bishara recounted that James Wan cast him as the Lipstick-Face Demon after he saw a shadow cast on his face. In Insidious: The Red Door's final arc, the Lipstick-Face Demon succeeds at possessing Dalton. However, Josh and Dalton outsmart him by drawing him back inside The Further and shutting him behind the red door by painting it black in Dalton's painting. This suggests that the Demon has been trapped inside The Further for good and may never be able to return to haunt and possess Dalton. While the writers behind the franchise could still find new ways to mark the Demon's return in future Insidious movies, it seems unlikely that he will return after Insidious: The Red Door's ending. However, spin-off installments of the Insidious films could explore the Lipstick-Face Demon's origin story and delve deeper into how he ended up becoming the ruler of The Further.
