Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wicked: Part 1 and Wicked the Broadway musical. The first installment in the two-part movie adaptation of Wicked sees a dramatic finale for Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera), and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) — with two of these three heading off on an unclear quest. As Wicked follows the friendship between the future Wicked With of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, things become complicated when they fall for the same man. Fiyero s Elphaba and Glinda at Shiz University sometime after the official start of term and strikes up a relationship with then-Galinda, later realizing his feelings for Elphaba.

The situation becomes more fraught in characters in Wicked's cast, Fiyero is seen looking concerned in Shiz's courtyard, then riding away on his horse through the front gate.

The Wicked Musical Does Not Confirm Where Fiyero Is Going

Fiyero Rides Away From The School, & The Source Material Does Not Tell Us Anything About This

The Broadway show, as it is staged, doesn't allow for this cut away to what Fiyero, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), and Boq (Ethan Slater) are doing during "Defying Gravity." Therefore, it offers no insights into where Fiyero is headed in the immediate aftermath of Elphaba going on the run in the movie. After he says goodbye to Elphaba and Glinda before they leave for the Emerald City, Fiyero isn't seen again until after the time jump that happens in between the first and second acts, when Glinda announces their engagement.

Why Glinda Can’t Do Magic In Wicked

Elphaba's magical abilities are a major part of the story in the adaptation of the Wicked musical, but why can't Glinda do magic as well?

2

Glinda presumably returns to Shiz during this time to train as a sorceress under Madame Morrible, when this is still her ambition. She, Fiyero, Nessarose, and Boq all would logically finish their education. However, wanting to take action as soon as Elphaba is threatened is in line with Fiyero's characterization. After Elphaba and Glinda wish each other well in "Defying Gravity," Glinda is able to live her life as she would have. Yet she is also ignorant of Fiyero's feelings for her best friend and why he would promptly run away because of her.

Fiyero Is Likely Going To Try To Find Elphaba In Wicked's Ending

Therefore, Fiyero's first instinct when he hears the news about Elphaba is to attempt to find and protect her. When he rides away from Shiz, he is probably embarking on a search for her. Elphaba does suggest she is going to Western Oz in the lyrics of "Defying Gravity" — hence the title the Wicked Witch of the West — giving Fiyero at least some indication of where to start looking. Fiyero's homeland of Winkie Country also makes up the Western region of Oz, perhaps making him believe he can find her when he knows the territory well.

After rushing to the last place he knows they both were, Fiyero would only find an emotionally wrought Glinda, with Elphaba long gone.

Fiyero might also be starting his search in the Emerald City (Morrible doesn"t actually say Elphaba is in the West in her announcement). After rushing to the last place he knows they both were, Fiyero would only find an emotionally wrought Glinda, with Elphaba long gone. However, Fiyero then might go back to Winkie Country rather than Shiz. If Shiz is the equivalent of college in this setting, it's not required that he attend. He's also proven to be very nonchalant about always getting kicked out of school, perhaps only repeatedly enrolling at the insistence of his family.

How Fiyero Leaving Shiz Sets Up His Wicked: Part Two Story

Fiyero Becomes Captain Of The Guard And Never Gives Up On Finding Elphaba

Fiyero's departure from Shiz is a natural segue into how he is depicted in the second act of the musical, with a more action-heavy role. Regardless of what he did in the intervening time, Fiyero becomes the Wizard's Captain of the Guard while Glinda is a spokesperson. He uses his position to continue looking for Elphaba — under the pretense of wanting to arrest her on behalf of the Wizard, but really wanting to protect her — but has had little success. It is implied that neither Glinda nor Fiyero has seen Elphaba since the events depicted in the movie.

When it comes down to it, Fiyero fights for Elphaba, no matter the cost. The Wicked movie makes Fiyero seem more competent, being a future soldier, earlier in the story, with him arriving at Shiz alone on horseback rather than by carriage — Bailey notably bringing his Bridgerton horse along for Wicked. While Fiyero lets his relationship with Glinda go on for too long, he goes on to prove that Elphaba is his priority, with his mission being to find her from the day she disappears.
