New Hunger Games Movies Won't Be Made Without More Books

Until Suzanne Collins Creates More Source Material A New Hunger Games Movie Is Unlikely

While these stories technically may not need novels to be developed into films, the producers and filmmakers of the franchise have indicated that they won't produce a new Hunger Games movie without source material from Collins. In an interview with direct a future prequel or sequel Hunger Games film. He clarified that there are currently no concrete plans for a follow-up movie.

He emphasized the need to have a book from Collins before considering the prospect of adding another film to the franchise. Lawrence said:

"If Suzanne has another thematic idea that she feels fits into the world of Panem — whether with new people or familiar characters — I'd be interested in being a part of it."

Given that The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes book was released in 2020, and with no news of another book from Collins, it's hard to say when — or even if — a new Hunger Games movie will enter development.

There Has Been A Tease Of More Hunger Games Projects

Nothing Official Has Been Confirmed, But The Franchise Likely Isn't Finished Over

While there hasn't been a new Hunger Games book announced by Suzanne Collins, and the producers of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes have expressed they wouldn't move forward with a new movie without a novel to base it on, there have been rumors and teases circulating about more projects set in the same universe. Given the success of the original The Hunger Games movies and the 2023 prequel, this is hardly a surprise, as there's still clearly an audience appetite for fresh stories in Panem.

Speaking in 2023, Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes producer Nina Jacobson teased Collins may have more Hunger Games books planned. While Jacobson's comments were far from concrete proof that readers and viewers can expect to return to Panem in the future, they are nevertheless incredibly hopeful. Collins herself hasn't said she's done with The Hunger Games, which is also a sign that there may be more to come.

There's also, of course, the will of the studio, Lionsgate, to consider. While producers like Francis Lawrence may be unwilling to create new Hunger Games projects without writing by Collins to base them on, financial incentive may mean that Lionsgate have no such qualms. Many successful franchises originally based on a book series have continued with their own original on-screen stories. This means that — unless Suzanne Collins is adamantly against it — there's always a chance that there could be new, original movies after The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in the future.
