Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Will Trent season 3, episode 12, "You're the Worst Person In the World."
Will's love life is a mess in the tragic events of Will Trent season 3, episode 11, Will's romantic prospects should be the last thing on his mind. However, his actions in episode 12, "You're the Worst Person In the World," still reveal some devastating truths about his relationship with the assistant district attorney.
Natalia Anderson directed Will Trent season 3, episode 12, "You're the Worst Person In the World," and Laura Snow wrote it.
Will Trent introduced Gina Rodriguez as Marion during the season 3 premiere, when Will encountered her while trying to solve a case. A few episodes later, Will and Marion ran into each other again, and sparks started flying. They soon started dating, and their romance seemed to be going strong. Unfortunately, that all changed in Will Trent season 3, episode 11, when Will accidentally shot and killed a young teenage boy while chasing a wanted parolee. Now, Will is struggling to live with his guilt and shame, and Marion can't help him.
Will & Marion Take A Break In Will Trent Season 3, Episode 12
Will Struggles To Let Marion In After Episode 11's Death
At the end of Will Trent season 3, episode 11, Will starts pushing Marion away, especially after she tells him he made a "clean shot." Consequently, their relationship takes a nosedive in episode 12. Marion tries to be there for Will, but he refuses her help (and lets Angie be there for him, even if it's only as a friend). During the hour's closing moments, Marion tells Will she's in love with him, seemingly trying to show him how much she cares. However, his lack of a reaction is all she needs to suggest they take a "break" while he goes undercover.

Even though Marion leaves the door open for their reunion, Will's apparent indifference to his now ex-girlfriend saying, "I love you," is all I need to confirm they aren't meant to be together. Yes, Will is going through something unimaginable that is affecting his behavior. But if he and Marion can't handle this obstacle, which is only one of many traumas that Will has experienced, their chances of lasting as a couple are slim to none.

Will Trent Season 3 Has Finally Found Its Will & Angie Romance Replacement (And They Might Even Be Better)
Will Trent season 3, episode 10 introduces a new couple, and after only one episode, they already have more potential than Will and Angie ever did.
Will Shutting Out Marion Isn't A Good Sign Of Their Longevity
Their Foundation Is Unsteady
Will can't let Marion in or effectively communicate with her in Will Trent season 3, episode 12. So, she steps away from the relationship. As Gina Rodriguez told TV Insider:
"Marion has had a very different journey from Will. Her last relationship with her ex ended amicably, and she is looking for similar — if not better — communication and respect in this relationship. Will processes differently, and because of their approach at dealing with grief, they hit a crossroads. Marion tries her best to open a pathway of communication, and it doesn’t seem to work, so she isn’t going to push something she doesn’t see working. Her self-worth and respect allow her to give him space and time without dragging her along for a ride. His response to her saying she loves him was all the clarity she needed to be the last straw."
Will needs someone he can communicate with and who is willing to stay with him despite his flaws, and sadly, that isn't Marion. Don't get me wrong, Marion has every right to break up with Will. Nevertheless, Will is complex, and after Will Trent season 3, episode 12, I wholly believe that Marion is just a stepping stone to his true soulmate.
Will & Marion Can Still Get Back Together In Will Trent Season 3
The Door Isn't Completely Closed On Their Relationship
Despite their agreed-upon "break" in "You're the Worst Person In the World," the possibility of Will and Marion rekindling their romance later in Will Trent season 3 remains. As mentioned above, Marion leaves the door open for Will if he wishes to continue pursuing a relationship with her. As of episode 12, though, Will clearly isn't ready to be with Marion, let alone anybody.
Will is going through a devastating trauma, one that he has never experienced before (and he has many traumatic events to his name). Since he isn't even willing to let a therapist help him, it's clear that Will must find his own way to process his hurt and guilt before he can be the best version of himself — something that Marion (or any of his potential romantic partners) deserves. This type of healing won't happen overnight. However, it's something Will needs to do, not only for himself but also for his loved ones.

I'm Suddenly Okay With Will's Betrayal After Will Trent Season 3 Debuts Angie's New Love Interest
Will Trent season 3, episode 8 introduces a new love interest for Angie, meaning she is finally moving on from Will after his betrayal.
Perhaps the GBI agent can actually start processing his most recent trauma once he returns from his undercover stint (or even during it). Then, the Will Trent main character can decide if he loves Marion or if he'd prefer to be single moving forward. Whatever the case, Will and Marion getting back together doesn't mean they will end up together in the ABC police procedural TV series.
Who Is Will's Endgame?
The Answer Is Easy If The Show Follows The Books
Since Marion remains a main character in Will Trent season 3, it won't be surprising if she and Will reunite in future episodes. However, given her job as the assistant district attorney, Marion could stick around simply to assist the GBI and APD with their cases. She's already helping with Will's confidential informant (aka Jeremy), after all. If Will eventually decides to run back to Marion, though, I'm confident it would only be a matter of time before they break up again.
If the ABC crime drama decides to follow Karin Slaughter's books, Will's true love in Will Trent should be Sara Linton.
Based on their development and sudden split in Will Trent season 3, it seems like Marion is the person the GBI agent was/will be with before meeting his soulmate. The two characters got together sort of quickly after Will and Angie broke up. Even though season 3 picked up six months after the events of the season 2 finale, the time between Will and Angie being together and Will and Marion's first date felt short. I wouldn't call Marion Will's rebound per se, but she definitely doesn't appear to be his soulmate either (and neither is Angie).
If the ABC crime drama decides to follow Karin Slaughter's books, Will's true love in Will Trent should be Sara Linton. The series has yet to introduce Sara, but she plays an important role in the novels on which the show is based. I won't delve too deep into Sara's character to avoid possible spoilers. However, many fans have wondered if and/or when Sara will enter Will's life. The cast and crew have discussed this possibility ad nauseam, and perhaps Will Trent will finally introduce Sara in season 4 (once ABC greenlights it).
New episodes of Will Trent season 3 air on Tuesdays at 8 pm ET on ABC.
