Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Will Trent season 3, episode 1!Will Trent season 3, episode 1. She assists the GBI by keeping the episode's murder case open, so the titular character can help his friend, Rafael Wexford (Antwayn Hopper), who was framed for murder. The real killer now has his daughter, Sunny, with the kidnapping case poised to become a central focus of the next episode.
Speaking with TVLine, however, Rodríguez addressed how Will Trent season 3 will show the title character growing closer to Marion. The actor, who's also an executive producer and directed season 3, episode 1, explained how both characters care about truth, both even reciting the same line in different scenarios. He confirms their connection is going to become more than just a professional one, with "the spark starts to happen" as the duo continue working together. Check out what Rodríguez had to say below:
When they meet, neither of them are looking for anything. Will is there, focused on a case, trying to get information. He runs into this woman who he doesn’t expect to be involved in [this case], and she’s an assistant district attorney, and he ends up realizing she’s got information. But I think the one connecting point that we realized, at least in that first episode, is when he says something to her… I think it’s something, like, “Doesn’t anybody care about truth and facts anymore?” and she says it later on when they’re at the office. There’s a core value that they might share, as to why they do what they do, and I think that really resonates for Will. And so, at first, it is strictly a professional thing, and I think slowly we end up seeing that it’s more than that. She’s a very different person for Will that he has not really encountered, and that we have definitely not seen. I mean, there’s been Angie, and we know that history…. there was Cricket, and that was so short-lived with a lot of potential… and then there’s Marion, who comes in and is a very slow build, and a slow relationship, and I think a lot of the things that surprise Will about her are, you know, she doesn’t judge him. She’s kind of just there, and available and present, and shows up. And they connect, and the spark starts to happen, and we kind of get to witness that, which is really cool.
What Rodríguez's Statement Means For Will & Marion In Will Trent Season 3
Their Connection Is Only Just Getting Started
Will and Marion haven't interacted much just yet, with her involvement so far only connecting to Will Trent season 3's important events in the premiere. It's unclear how closely they'll be working together in the future, given the core differences between their jobs and responsibilities. However, with season 3, episode 2 focusing on the same case, it's possible a hint of the sparks Rodríguez talked about will be shown. Even if it's small, it sounds like the pair are going to have a slow-burn romance over the course of the episodes.

Will Trent Season 4: Confirmation & Everything We Know
ABC's character-driven police drama Will Trent returned for a third season in early 2025, and the show scored a season 4 too.
Their sense of justice has already been established as very similar, with both of them expecting others to be on the same page as them when it comes to truth. Instead, there's a clear connection the pair have that's uniquely their own, even though they haven't interacted much just yet. However, this means the end of Will Trent's relationship with Angie (Erika Christensen), something that could complicate the main character's love life given the guilt he still feels over arresting her at the end of season 2.
Our Take On Will & Marion's Budding Relationship
The Show's New Romance Might Be Good For Both Characters
Since both Will and Marion have similar ideas on how cases should be approached, the pair will no doubt work well together on the cases Will Trent season 3 explores. Their sense of justice being so similar means they could be good for one another, perhaps giving the main character a chance to heal from his regretful decision in the season 2 finale. With their connection only deepening as the show progresses, it should prove interesting to see how close the pair get.
New episodes of Will Trent season 3 air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
