The world of Netflix in December 2019 and was one of the platform’s most anticipated releases of the year. Netflix knew the impact the series was going to have with fans of the books and video games, and decided to renew it for a second season before the first one was out.

The Witcher took a different approach to the source material, choosing to focus on three characters whose stories were set in different places and points in time, with them converging towards the end of the season. The series’ main characters are Law of Surprise, and they finally met at the end of the series.

With Ciri’s family now dead, Geralt is the only parent figure she has, and given that he’s a witcher, Ciri is the closest to a daughter that he can ever have, as he – as well as Yennefer – can’t have children. A witcher’s training and preparation begins at a very early age, and these children are subjected to alchemical processes, mutagenic compounds, and intense physical and magical training. As a result, witchers go through many mutations, which give them strength, speed, endurance, and more, but also leave them sterile. This wasn’t shown nor mentioned in the series, as viewers meet Geralt as an adult, but it might come up in future seasons.

The Witcher season 1 Geralt Yennefer

Geralt is a father figure to Ciri, and Yennefer is like a mother to her, as she’s also unable to have children. Yennefer, like most sorceresses, is sterile and secretly sought a way of restoring her fertility. In the case of sorceresses, infertility comes as a consequence of magic, which has damaging effects on their reproductive system. However, unlike witchers, not all sorceresses are infertile: for example, Geralt’s mother, Visenna, was a sorceress, but many children born of sorceresses were dangerous and driven insane. In the series, however, the reason was different. The initiation of sorceresses includes going through a process in which an enchanter leaves every girl as a living work of art. Yennefer missed her initiation, so she went to the enchanter and demanded that he made her beautiful. The enchanter didn’t have the herbs necessary tmano sedate her, but she chose to go through it anyway. The enchanter explained to her that there’s a price to pay: to be reborn, she would bear no more, and so he removed her reproductive organs.

Later on in the series, Yennefer tried different methods to regain her fertility, such as attempting to obtain a The Witcher season 2 and/or in future seasons, more so now that Ciri is finally with Geralt.
