The remake of the original Witcher game will have more in common with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with developer CD Projekt Red confirming that it will be an open-world game. In October, developer CDPR revealed that an Unreal Engine 5-built remake of The Witcher is one of the many projects it has in the works, much to the excitement of fans who feel that the 2007 original hasn’t aged as well as its follow-ups. Polish studio Fool’s Theory will handle the development of this reimagining of Geralt of Rivea’s first interactive adventure, with CDPR acting as a creative supervisor.

Aside from being rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, very little is known about CDPR's newly announced Witcher remake. However, the studio has just revealed some enticing information during its annual third-quarter earnings report. As reported by TheGamer, CDPR mentioned that The Witcher Remake will be a “story-driven, single-player, open-world RPG - a modern reimagining of 2007's The Witcher.” The mention of an open world means that The Witcher Remake will be more in-line with the highly successful The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which allowed players to travel the Continent as they slay monsters and complete a near-endless list of side quests.

The Witcher Remake Will Expand On The Original Game

In comparison, the original Witcher was a more linear affair. While Geralt could explore the game map and perform a wide range of side activities in the fictional Temerian capital of Vizima, the world was mostly divided into separate, level-like sections. This is just one of the many aspects of the original Witcher that feels different from the more fleshed-out sequels, with the hope being that the Witcher remake will make replaying the series fun by bringing in well-received concepts from those later games.

At the very least, it seems that The Witcher remake could be much bigger than the original if it indeed has the open-world format of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Being able to explore a vast fantasy landscape packed with side quests and other fun content was one of the many aspects that earned The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt near-universal acclaim when it first launched in 2015, and it will be interesting to see how Fool’s Theory expands on the already large The Witcher in the remake. There are plenty of other fun features from The Witcher 3 that the remake could use, such as the extremely popular in-universe card game Gwent.

For now though, CDPR has confirmed that The Witcher remake will feature the open-world framework that made The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt such a success in the previous console generation. There is still much more to be unveiled about The Witcher remake, but fans can now see how this reimagining might play when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s current-gen update launches on December 14.
