As a fan-favorite member of the Marvel's strongest friendships.
Despite their radically different powers and backgrounds, Logan and Carol have far more in common than fans may realize. As former government agents, Carol and Logan fought alongside on another long before either donned the colorful costume or catchy codenames as Avengers or X-Men. And when either one was in a pinch, the other would always come running.
After the events of Avengers Annual #10 by Chris Claremont and Michael Golden sees Carol left amnesiac and powerless, the former Avenger turns to Professor Charles Xavier and his fellow X-Men for help restoring her memories. While her past is never fully restored to her, she remains with the Merry Mutants through many adventures, and her shared military history with Wolverine is revealed along the way. The heroes are established as old friends and comrades-in-arms having worked together for years in special forces alongside SHIELD Director Nick Fury.
When Carol is captured and imprisoned by the KGB, Wolverine even disobeys direct orders and goes to rescue her himself alongside their old friend, Michael Rossi. Years later, Carol – or at least Wolverine’s mental image of her – would return the favor in helping a traumatized Logan escape from the Hand alongside a vision of Fury in Uncanny X-Men #258 by Claremont and Jim Lee. This is far from the last time Wolverine and Captain Marvel team up, and they would even reunite as of the New Avengers during the team’s eponymous series by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen.
In recent years, the duo’s friendship has largely taken a backseat as their profiles have risen both within continuity and among the general public. Wolverine has always been one of Marvel’s most popular characters, but since he has shouldered more responsibility after the events of Avengers vs X-Men by Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction, and others, Logan has become even more detached from his non-mutant allies in the Avengers. And with the advent of the Krakoan nation, that gulf has only grown as he’s once again become the primary operative for the mutants’ black-ops X-Force division.
Meanwhile, Carol’s stock has skyrocketed since her ascension to the Captain Marvel mantle. In the time since, she’s been fighting the good fight as one of Earth’s premiere Avengers, a member of the fan-favorite Ultimates, and even a stint as the director of the Alpha Flight Interstellar Defense and Diplomacy Initiative. While she’s no doubt accomplished great things, Carol’s missions have taken her higher, further, and faster away from her old partner than either hero would like to it.
While Wolverine and Captain Marvel still keep in touch, a rekindling of their classic partnership could do wonders for both characters. Not only would it reconnect Logan and Carol with an integral part of their respective histories, but it could go a long way towards improving Avengers/X-Men relations. And with the events of Judgment Day throwing both the X-Men and the Avengers into disarray, there’s never been a better opportunity for Marvel to reunite Wolverine and Captain Marvel.
