Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Wolverine #7 (2025)Wolverine is completely outmatched in his latest clash with one of his most controversial foes. Caught in a long-buried war between ancient magic and unbreakable metal, the X-Man faces a terrifying reckoning as ghosts from his past return, now wielding a god-like golden aura. When pitted against the divine power of Adamantine, Wolverine’s legendary Adamantium claws—once thought unstoppable—prove utterly useless.

In Wolverine #7 (2025) by Saladin Ahmed & Martín Cóccolo, Logan and his daughter, Laura Kinney, face a violent assault by one of Wolverine’s most iconic yet scrutinized villains: Romulus. In their fight, Wolverine’s claws flimsily bounce off of Romulus’s fully golden form. Romulus returns Wolverine’s assault tenfold, unleashing an unstoppable barrage of clawed attacks while Logan fails to land a single blow.

Romulus attacks Wolverine from above.

While Wolverine’s claws have never been infallibly unstoppable, this particular weakness exposes the clear difference between the man-made and the divine. Unfortunately for Logan, the power of the gods is not on his side, and his greatest offensive strength is failing to keep up.

Wolverine's Adamantium Is No Match For True 'Adamantine'

Wolverine's claws bounce off Romulus.

The multi-thousand-year-old villain Romulus has been said to have led Rome, conquered empires, and sired Wolverine’s genetic lineage all to breed the perfect weapon. However, Romulus has since abandoned his original mission, now swearing fealty to the mystically sentient metal known as Adamantine. As both Romulus and Wolverine acknowledge, Adamantium is nothing but a copy of Adamantine’s true nature. In this comparison, Adamantium falls short—dull, frail, and lifeless—when measured against the god-like, radiant essence of Adamantine.

Listen, Marvel: There's Never Been a Better Time to Bring Back Your Most Badass Wolverine

With Marvel bringing back Wolverine’s iconic villains, now is the prime time to re-introduce the X-Men hero’s most underrated and badass variant.

Until this current Wolverine series, Adamantium was considered the strongest and most durable metal in all existence. While Vibranium, another form of living metal, comes close, Adamantium was designed through Romulus’s centuries-long plans to triumph over all of man’s creations. However, when Romulus and Wolverine clash, the primeval warlord its that he had spent much of his early conquests studying the legends of Adamantine. Despite lifetimes of searching, Romulus failed to discover the hiding place of the metal and instead chose to create a synthetic copy. Now, the Adamantine has awoken from its slumber and anointed Romulus as its newest champion.

The Powers of Adamantine Are Putting Wolverine's Metal To Shame

Romulus' Control Over His Metal May Not Be as Powerful as He Lets On

Romulus absorbs the power of the other Adamantine-powered people.

Logan and Laura are already facing a losing fight against Adamantine’s natural advantage, but the mystical metal has further imbued Romulus with additional powers that far sur what his underlings have shown so far. Unlike the likes of Cyber or Lady Deathstrike, Romulus seemingly controls the heavenly urges of the Adamantine that flow through him. In his own words, “They are mere thralls of the Adamantine, but I am its regent and its champion.” After a short scuffle, Romulus extends a single glowing arm as the Earth below him and Wolverine collapse in a magical display of power.

However, as Romulus boasts of his divine metal's power, he almost speaks as if he is the Adamantine himself. He recounts the memories of the living metal as if they were his own, just as the other drones do. Romulus may postulate his self-control, but he will most likely find himself, a comparatively mere mortal, humbled by the godly powers that currently possess him. Wolverine has always known that Romulus carries himself with more dignity than his actions deserve. The only advantage Wolverine has now lies in the egotistical whims of a war-hungry mutant.
