Warning! This article contains spoilers for Deadpool: Badder Blood #1 Adamantium can cut through nearly anything in the Marvel Universe, but now, there’s yet another substance that’s impervious to Wolverine’s claws, one that shockingly becomes more fortified the harder it’s struck.

James “Logan” Howlett aka Wolverine was born with six retractable bone claws that extend from his fists, though they wouldn’t become the unparalleled weapons they are today until after Wolverine was granted a deadly upgrade. However, after his latest battle against a formidable foe, Wolverine has come to realize that Weapon X’s deadly upgrade somehow wasn’t deadly enough.

Deadpool Villain, Thumper, Has Armor Stronger Than Wolverine’s Claws

In Deadpool: Badder Blood #1 by Rob Liefeld and Chad Bowers, Wolverine and Cable have teamed up to take down Deadpool’s arch rival/frenemy, Thumper. Thumper (aka Miles Ellison) was an old friend of Wade Wilson’s who signed up with Department H specifically to get powers just like Deadpool. When the experimentation was complete, Miles tracked down Deadpool and killed him over and over again, as he wanted to impress his former colleague. While his power was impressive to the Merc with a Mouth, his villainous inclinations made Thumper a target for other, more heroic antiheroes like Wolverine and Cable. Thus, the two warriors charged into battle against Thumper, only to realize that the armor he was wearing was impervious to adamantium. But more than that, as Wolverine points out, “The harder I swing, the less damage I do”.

The man Wolverine and Cable were saving from Thumper in this issue–the former head of Department H, Van Strutten–revealed that the armor Thumper was wearing was crafted by the unrivaled armorer, Doctor Daedalus. Strutten explained that the reason Wolverine’s attacks were getting less effective the harder he hit was that Daedalus’ armor was made to repel bullets and lesser metals. However, Strutten also revealed that they never figured out how to make the armor strong enough to withstand adamantium, and that Thumper figured that out on his own. This means that it’s not just Thumper’s suit that is a match for Wolverine and his adamantium, but Thumper himself.

Someone who can design (or, rather, upgrade) armor that can repel adamantium–armor that becomes more effective the harder the adamantium weapon attacks–is a threat that Wolverine has no hope of defeating. While Thumper is first and foremost a Deadpool villain, his armor has made him more than a match for Wolverine and his adamantium claws, proven true by the line, “The harder I swing, the less damage I do”.
