The Colossus receive adamantium upgrades that put their current selves to shame!
As seen in 2001’s X-Men: Millennial Visions #2, this issue acts as a sort of “What If?” special that gives fans short story ideas and pieces of art that never came to be in Marvel’s "main" X-Men timeline. And in the tale titled “X-Men: Reborn” by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver, these creators bring to life a future where these two iconic X-Men heroes get the upgrades they rightly deserve.
As described on the text page, this dark timeline takes place in the then-future of 2006 when, after capturing and abusing Professor X’s mental powers, the X-Men villain of Apocalypse succeeds in activating the latent abilities of over 200,000 mutants across the globe, killing Xavier in the process. Through little blurbs given about the remaining X-Men and how they’ve lived since the death of their mentor, readers are told that both Wolverine and Colossus have succumbed to similar fates related to the infamous Weapon X program.
Discovered by Wolverine while being held captive by Weapon X, it’s said that thanks to Weapon X’s meddling, Colossus is now “permanently comprised of solid adamantium.” Meanwhile, after being re-captured by Weapon X himself, Wolverine spent three years being experimented on, resulting in his teeth and muscles becoming “laced with adamantium.” And by upgrading Wolverine and Colossus’ already tough-as-nails natures, Weapon X inadvertently created two of the most indestructible heroes in the X-Men’s long history of unbreakable mutants!
Acting as a long-overdue upgrade for Colossus, the fact that he has yet to take advantage of a world where overly strong metals like adamantium, vibranium, and even their newly combined alloy called mysterium are readily available for him to augment himself with, this upgrade comes across as more of a no-brainer than anything else, especially considering the increase in power and durability Colossus gets from him metal-ing doesn’t seem to be as impactful as it once was. When it comes to Wolverine, he might actually welcome adamantium-laced teeth, as Black Panther gave him a hard time with his own adamantium chompers in the recent Phoenix Tournament. Furthermore, with Wolverine’s muscles laced with this famous metal as well, he’ll not only become stronger and faster but can surely take even more hits as his iconic mutant regeneration powers wouldn’t have to work as hard since the rest of his body now contains more adamantium than ever before.
So while this dark future never came to in main X-Men continuity, the idea of Wolverine being even more adamantium-enabled while upgrading Colossus to untold levels of durability and power is still fun to think on. The X-Men's Wolverine and Colossus are tougher than most, but with these upgrades, no one can touch them.
