While fans await Hugh Jackman's return to the Wolverine role in next year's Deadpool 3, one cosplayer has gone ahead and created his own comics-accurate version of the Wolverine costume that audiences have been longing for for decades. In the midst of Jackman's comeback performance, fans are wondering if the beloved actor will finally don the character's trademark yellow and blue spandex costume.
Actor and cosplayer Caleb Weeks (@calebweekss) has committed to producing the Wolverine costume that 20th Century Fox could never muster the courage to plant on screen. The costume is directly inspired by the artistry of Dave Cockrum and John Byrne, who helped define the character's general design upon Logan's ing the X-Men. Even the eyes of the mask are completely pupil-less and help highlight the authenticity of the comic book source material on an even greater scale.
Caleb's commenters are quite enthusiastic about the cosplay as well, with some making comparison to Wolverine's famous outfit on the widely popular X-Men: The Animated Series from the early '90s.
This Is The Live-Action Wolverine Fans Have Waited For
Dating back to Wolverine's comic book debut in Len Wein and Roy Thomas' The Incredible Hulk #180, Logan has donned a colorful yellow and blue (with mask) suit that has remained synonymous with the hero for decades. Following the character's popularity with readers, it was not long before Wolverine would make his way to other forms of media such as animation and film. Hugh Jackman became the first to gain the opportunity to play the beloved X-Man in 2000's film of the same name. Jackman's Wolverine quickly became a massive hit with mainstream audiences, but comic fans expected a bit more from the "ol canucklehead." Though Jackman may have had Wolverine's classic demeanor and characteristics down to a science, Logan's on-screen interpretation lacked the fantastical qualities of his comic book variant.
Though the character can be considered a risk when paired with other heroes, Wolverine's costume ultimately represents his willingness to adhere to the ideals of Professor Xavier and his X-Men, who would help bring out Logan's inner hero. A colorful yellow and blue suit can be quite silly at first glance, but Wolverine and the X-Men operate in a world where most human beings tend to idolize superheroes. Being hated and feared, embracing the superhero moniker is a necessary means to help sway negative backlash aimed at the X-Men as well as the larger mutant community. And as Weeks' cosplay shows, the costume does not look ridiculous in live-action, contrary to what Fox executives might have thought when producing the first film.
As the X-Men's MCU introduction nears, all eyes are on the team's most iconic member. Deadpool 3 promises to take Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in a new direction and adopting a costume that pays homage to Wolverine's comic book roots would surely do the trick.
