The X-Men’s Wolverine has an instantly recognizable costume design that hasn’t changed much over the years aside from a few subtle tweaks and color scheme swaps, with his persona while under the influence of Apocalypse being a short-lived moment in the character’s long and storied history as a superhero. In a new cosplay, Wolverine’s time as the Horseman of Death is brought to life, giving the live-action space a new way to bring Logan to the silver screen.
Creating, wearing, and showing off this deep-cut Wolverine design on social media via Instagram, Mike Washington (@mikedastardly87) is a cosplayer who has cut his teeth bringing Logan and his various character designs into the real world, with this latest look only being one of the many impressive costumes Mike has under his belt.
Adding to his already respectable Wolverine cosplay resume with this Horseman of Death design, Mike has previously dressed as Feral Wolverine, Team X Wolverine, Weapon X Wolverine, X-Force Wolverine, and, of course, Wolverine in his go-to yellow look, with each doing justice to their comic counterpart perfectly.
Wolverine Becomes Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death in New Comic-Accurate Cosplay
Cosplay Design by Mike Washington (@mikedastardly87)
A new villainous persona revealed in 1990’s X-Men #95, by Alan Davis and Tom Raney, and then further explored in 2000’s Wolverine #146, by Erik Larson, Fabian Nicieza, and Mike Miller, Wolverine’s heel turn as Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death came at a time when the adamantium was stripped from his body, leaving Logan in an increasingly feral state. Forcing his insidious influence on Wolverine, Apocalypse brainwashed Logan for his own purposes, with Wolverine eventually returning to his senses thanks to Jubilee and the rest of the X-Men’s help, ending a short-lived but brutal chapter in the character’s story.
Bringing this one-and-done Wolverine costume back in a big way, Mike shows that this ambitious redesign is indeed possible in the live-action space as he leaves nothing behind in the transition from the page to real life. Wearing comic-accurate Horsemen of Death armor, a fully red-wrapped face with piercing yellow eyes, and brandishing two short swords, Mike nails this look in a way that deserves recognition and even gives fans a short clip showing a Skrull Wolverine at the mercy of Logan’s tainted Horseman of Death, with the ancient evil that is Apocalypse standing against the night sky behind them.
Wolverine Cosplay Proves That This Horseman of Death Design Can Work in the MCU
Wolverine Was Saved by the X-Men From His Horseman Fate
Though this is a costume that was featured in Marvel Comics for only a short while, it’s one that marks a unique moment in Wolverine’s life as he continued to struggle with his past and the loss of his adamantium, ensuring that this version of the character will always be a brutal reminder of what can happen when Logan loses himself to his worst tendencies. Wolverine has more than enough costumed looks that still haven’t had their time to shine in the MCU, so here’s hoping that after seeing Mike Washington’s (@mikedastardly87) impeccable Horseman of Death design, Hollywood follows suit.
