Summary

  • As depicted in Marvel Comics Presents #83, Wolverine's first escape from Weapon X was a simulated experiment, designed to indicate what lengths he would go to in order to escape captivity.
  • After the trauma he experienced being treated like an animal at the hands of weapon X, Wolverine has since proven himself time and again to be a man, one of comion and stoic heroism.
  • Wolverine's eventual actual escape shattered Weapon X's expectations of how brutal he could be, and he has carried the darkness and fear of that moment with him ever since.

Wolverine has been through a lot of trauma in his life, but the darkest period was the Weapon X program. This program sought to turn Wolverine into a killing machine, nothing more than a mindless animal to point at enemies. As one issue of Marvel Comics Presents showed, the first time Wolverine escaped, it was all just part of the experiment.

During one of the many testing phases of the Weapon-X Program, Wolverine broke free, rampaging through the facility, making his way towards Professor Hudson, the man leading the program. This resulted in a brutal scene where Wolverine confronted the doctor, screaming: "I am Logan! I am a man!"

This ended with Wolverine butchering Hudson escaping into the wilderness; unfortunately, this entire scenario was a simulation. It turns out Wolverine never really escaped, they just put him in virtual reality to play out this scene, trying to see under what circumstances Wolverine would use lethal force against them.

Wolverine has struggled with over the years with the perception that he is an animal. This is both due to his bestial nature and the fact he's a mutant. Many factions have tried to strip away his humanity and turn him into a weapon for them, such as Hydra and The Hand. Wolverine also often enters a berserker rage, further cementing peoples views of him as an animal. But despite all of these things, Logan is a man of deep comion, which is why it's all the more tragic that his first moment of declaring his humanity was completely fake.

When Logan finally escaped the facility of Weapon X, there is no grand statement about his humanity; he simply slaughtered the people responsible and wandered out into the wilderness. Wolverine always carries the trauma of Weapon X with him, and it informs the core of his character, as he responds with stoic heroism, as he continues to prove himself a man, not an animal. This is one of the reasons Logan spends so much time as a loner, for fear of his animal side coming out, and when he so enthusiastically commits to being an X-Man when he does.
