WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for Wonder Woman #16!

In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment in the latest Wonder Woman release, I’m 98% sure DC has just revealed the first superpower of Diana Prince and Steve Trevor’s daughter. The revelation and acquisition of these powers is nothing short of brilliant, masterfully incorporating a classic element of Wonder Woman lore.

For those just catching up on the Themyscira madness, Wonder Woman has undergone one of her most significant character evolutions in decades. In issue #14 of Tom King and Daniele Sampere’s run, Diana loses the love of her life—Steve Trevor—and becomes a mother to their clay-made daughter, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Marston Prince.

Given Lizzie’s shared clay origin with Diana, it’s reasonable to assume she’ll inherit a similar powerset, though this hasn’t been confirmed. However, issue #16 has just revealed what I believe to be Lizzie’s first superpower, and it’s a twist I never saw coming. If my understanding is correct, Wonder Woman has just imbued her daughter with the powers of the Lasso of Truth.

Lizzie’s Power Origin Story Echoes the Legendary Achilles’ Own

Wonder Woman #16 picks up the tone of the previous issue, with Diana focusing all her attention on her daughter, Lizzie, while entrusting her allies to handle the villainous Sovereign. In this issue, Diana travels with Lizzie and her Lasso of Truth to one of the temples on Themyscira, where a cloaked woman and what appears to be a basin of water await them. Through the art alone, the cloaked woman is shown dipping the end of the Lasso of Truth into the basin, causing the liquid to glow a golden color, matching the lasso's hue.

The woman then removes the Lasso from the now-golden water, dips her finger into the liquid, and gently wets Lizzie’s forehead with it. This ritual feels reminiscent of a baptism and even echoes the myth of Achilles, whose mother dipped him into the River Styx to grant him invincibility—except for his heel where the water didn’t touch. But instead of the River Styx, Lizzie is blessed by water infused with the power of the Lasso of Truth. Hence, it’s not hard to infer that, through this blessing, Lizzie has inherited the powers of her mother’s Lasso of Truth.

If my inference is correct and Lizzie now possesses the powers of the Lasso of Truth through the blessing she underwent, it would mean she has gained several overpowered abilities. First and foremost, she would have the innate ability to compel people to tell the truth. While this is an iconic power for Wonder Woman, Diana can only achieve this with the Lasso of Truth. The implication here is that Lizzie could compel the truth from others even without the Lasso in her possession. But this isn’t the only overpowered ability Lizzie would now have.

If Lizzie has been granted the full scope of the Lasso of Truth's abilities, she would have resistance to mind control and also immunity to illusions and other deceptions. In addition to these, she would likely be indestructible and invulnerable. Beyond that, Lizzie could also have the power to restore lost or hidden memories and provide emotional healing. She may even gain the ability to temporarily compel others to follow her commands, as well as generate light or energy for attacks. With the blessing of the Lasso of Truth, Lizzie’s potential powers have expanded into an excitingly overpowered realm of possibility.

Tom King May Have Just Sneakily Confirmed Trinity Has the Power to Compel the Truth from Others

Has Trinity Been Compelling the Truth from the Sovereign the Entire Time?

Wonder Woman #16 Sovereign trinity temple

While it may seem like fans have a long wait to discover if Lizzie has truly been blessed with the powers of the Lasso of Truth, Tom King may have already subtly confirmed one of these abilities: Lizzie’s power to compel the truth from others. To understand this, it’s important to that the Sovereign’s narration throughout the series occurs in the future, and he is telling the story to a seemingly older, imprisoned Lizzie, who now goes by the name ‘Trinity.’ In issue #16, the present-time narrative shows the Sovereign lying to characters like Detective Chimp, Superman, and the world as a whole.

However, in his narration of these 'past events,' the Sovereign its that, although he has lied to others, he feels compelled to share the truth with Trinity. He explains that the reason he tells her this story, which features his own humiliations, is because she is Trinity, the holder of the three Lassos of Fate, and as such, she commands respect and is owed "veracity." Given the Sovereign’s established reputation as a liar and hatred for women, it seems odd that he would openly share the truth with Trinity despite the reasons he provides. Hence, this suggests that King may be subtly confirming Trinity’s inherent ability to compel the truth from others.

While it would undoubtedly be utterly badass if it were confirmed that Trinity possesses the powers of the Lasso of Truth, what resonates with me even more are the emotional implications if this turns out to be true. Diana could have easily blessed her daughter with any number of powers, yet she specifically chose the Lasso of Truth. This decision would guarantee that Lizzie’s mind will always be her own, that she will never be deceived by others or broken by the world—an action of motherly love that I find profoundly beautiful.

This sentiment of Wonder Woman empowering her daughter in this way echoes a powerful moment in Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer’s Wonder Woman: Dead Earth. In this retelling of Diana's origin, Queen Hippolyta goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure her daughter will be “strong. So strong that she could never be hurt.” Hippolyta creates Diana from clay, infused with a drop of blood from all the gods, with the sole purpose of making her impervious to harm. It’s profoundly moving, then, to see Wonder Woman reflect this same motherly determination, striving to make her daughter as strong as possible to protect her from those who might seek to harm her.
