In Wonder Woman's new nemesis Sovereign meets with Private Delgado, a soldier Diana defeated in the previous issue. Delgado took the loss in stride and marvels at the Sovereign's historical relics. The elderly man reveals the most treasured relic in his collection: A mysterious lasso.
The Sovereign and the soldier hold the lasso together and Sovereign subtly begins brainwashing Delgado, making him feel emasculated and angry at Wonder Woman. Sovereign convinces Delgado that he needs to end his agony, causing the soldier to write a suicide note and take his life later that evening.
The Lasso of Lies Makes People Believe in Mistruths
Wonder Woman has had a lot of curious enemies over the years, but her newest antagonist may be her most sinister. The Sovereign is the secret king of America, a man whose family line has been ruling the United States since its founding. The Sovereign's ancestors massacred a tribe of women in Central Virginia and stole a weapon from their temples: A lariat known as the Lasso of Lies. The aged king claims that the country was conquered with the lasso and that the Sovereign line retained their rule by using the lasso to make America's people believe they were actually free.
A flashforward in Wonder Woman #800 showed Diana's future daughter Trinity using the lasso, but it wasn't until now that its true power has been revealed. The Sovereign's lasso essentially operates like the opposite of Wonder Woman's. Rather than bring the truth out of an individual, it forces people to accept and believe the lies told by the holder. This explains how the Sovereign has been able to secretly rule the United States for so long. He and his family have been selectively brainwashing key individuals with the Lasso of Lies to gain and remain in power while staying completely unknown to most of the world.
Only Wonder Woman's Lasso Can Undo the Sovereign's Lies
The world has turned against Wonder Woman and the rest of the Amazons thanks to a campaign of paranoia fomented by the Sovereign. Right now the world is gripped by the falsehoods spun by the Lasso of Lies. The only shot Wonder Woman has at restoring normalcy to the world is by using the Lasso of Truth to undo these falsehoods (no easy task given how long the Sovereign's line has reigned and how many lies have been told). But if there's one anyone capable of getting to the truth, it's Wonder Woman, who can hopefully undo the damage the Lasso of Lies has wrought.
Wonder Woman #3 is on sale now from DC Comics.
