Wonder Woman vs. The Sovereign! After being captured by a team of villains, Diana finds herself at the mercy of the scariest of them all. Unbeknownst to our hero, the Sovereign has been pulling her strings since the very beginning of our tale, and now it’s time for her to see the world his way as she falls under the influence of the Lasso of Lies! Plus, Trinity visits the past and unexpectedly changes the future!

Daniel Sampere and Belén Ortega's cover for Wonder Woman #8 shows Diana being placed under the influence of the Sovereign's sinister weapon, the Lasso of Lies. The solicited information implies that this isn't a bait and switch and that the Sovereign is actually going to take control of Wonder Woman's mind.

Wonder Woman is Beaten by Her Most Sinister Villain, the Sovereign

Wonder Woman Nemesis the Sovereign 1

When a rogue Amazon killed a pool hall full of men, the United States quickly fell to a wave of anti-Amazon bigotry. Masterminding this sentiment was the Sovereign, the secret king of America, who wanted to turn his country against Amazons and more importantly, Wonder Woman. Like Wonder Woman, the Sovereign also possesses a Lasso of Fate, known as the Lasso of Lies, the weapon that's given the Sovereign's family rule over America for generations. Whereas Diana's lariat can force out the truth, those bound by the Lasso of Lies believe any falsehoods the Lasso's holder instills in them.

Though Wonder Woman has yet to meet with the Sovereign, fans already saw what he was capable of in Wonder Woman #3. The elderly king used his lasso to make a soldier believe he'd been emasculated after being defeated by Wonder Woman, causing him to commit suicide and advance the Sovereign's agenda. Seeing Wonder Woman in this position is unsettling to see. Diana is used to villains who want to kill her, but Sovereign is after her complete and utter submission. This cover shows just how dangerous Sovereign is and how important it is that Wonder Woman ultimately defeats him.

The Sovereign Embodies Everything That Wonder Woman Hates

Wonder Woman, the Sovereign about to use the "Lasso of Lies" on an unseen character.

Wonder Woman was created to examine the idea of submission to a loving authority, something that the Sovereign most certainly is not. He's forcing compliance by whatever means necessary to ensure his rule. Though it remains to be seen how Wonder Woman will escape the control of the Lasso of Lies, this cover is a stark reminder of what Diana is fighting against. The Sovereign isn't going to stop until everyone is under his tyrannical rule and Wonder Woman must do whatever she can to break his hold and overthrow the mad king.

Wonder Woman #8 is available April 16th.
