Warning: Spoilers for Wonder Woman #6 ahead!
Summary
- Giganta plays a vital role in the Sovereign's plan to take down Wonder Woman with her raw power and invulnerability.
- Despite being overlooked, Giganta's strength is showcased, establishing her as a major threat to Wonder Woman.
- Recent Wonder Woman titles emphasize Giganta's power and anti-hero dynamic, giving her the respect she deserves.
DC's latest major threat, the Sovereign, is bringing his full might to bear against Wonder Woman, highlighting the strengths of one of her most overlooked villains along the way. Giganta may not be the first enemy one thinks of when picturing Diana's classic foes, but she's quick to show why she can throw down with the rest of DC's biggest and baddest.
In Tom King and Daniel Sampere's Wonder Woman #6, the Sovereign initiates his plan to take down Diana. Using the talents of her assembled foes, his team ambushes her on the National Mall, where a massive battle ensues — one that wouldn't be half so massive without Giganta.
While big names like Circe and Dr. Psycho are instrumental in setting up the ambush, the bulk of the plan revolves around Giganta being able to go toe-to-toe with Wonder Woman, pummeling her with the Washington Monument and landing blows that "would have killed a great many of the heroes who so unhesitatingly call themselves super."

"Y'all Are Crazy": Wonder Woman's Latest Second Printing Marks Unprecedented Success
Tom King and Daniel Sampere's Wonder Woman gets its latest second printing, marking it as an unprecedented success within the DC fan community.
Giganta Is One of Wonder Woman's Unappreciated Powerhouse Villains
Despite being one of Wonder Woman's oldest foes (in one version or another), Giganta tends to be brushed aside by fans for figures in Diana's rogue's gallery who can challenge her ethics and principles as opposed to her raw strength. That said, Giganta is no slouch: not only is she a brilliant scientist, her giant-form is nigh invulnerable and incredibly strong. When she is infected in Tom Taylor, Lucas Meyer, Romulo Fajardo, Jr., and Wes Abbott's Titans: Beast World #4, she becomes one of the few threats that warrants an all-hands-on-deck alert for every available hero to confront.
Giganta first appeared in 1944's Wonder Woman #9 by William Marston and Harry Peter — as a gorilla who has been hyper-evolved into a human.
Case in point: while the bulk of Wonder Woman #6's narrative weight comprises the goddess-to-goddess fight between Diana and Grail, the Sovereign's ambush plan largely boils down to the other villains occupying Wonder Woman long enough for Giganta to land the coup de grâce. While other villains like Dr. Psycho and Circe cast far greater shadows over Wonder Woman's career, Giganta is entrusted to kill Wonder Woman by virtue of her raw power. It's a major acknowledgment of the threat Giganta poses — despite not being able to match the insidious machinations of her peers.
Giganta's Might Shines in Recent Wonder Woman Issues
Despite being a lower-stakes villain than most of Wonder Woman's foes, Giganta's penchant for crossing the line between villain and anti-hero makes her an excellent wild-card element and, paired with her power, gives her an edge that other villains lack. The recent emphasis on her sheer strength in titles such as Titans: Beast World and the ongoing Wonder Woman run helps to keep her at the forefront of readers' awareness and finally gives one of Wonder Woman's longest-running nemeses the respect she is due.
Wonder Woman #6 is available now from DC Comics.
