Warning! Spoilers ahead for Wonder Woman #21!Sorry Wonder Woman and Superman relationship.

Longtime fans were stunned during the New 52 when Superman and Wonder Woman began a whirlwind romance in the pages of Justice League. That relationship was brief and (thankfully) removed from canon. And for those who still hold out hope for a rekindling for Clark and Diana, DC is putting the kibosh on things. Despite their affection for one another, Diana used to tell Steve Trevor she loved him more than the Earth, and, sadly, that’s not a love Superman can exactly reciprocate. Clark is a great guy, but he can’t compete with Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor’s love.

Wonder Woman Loved Steve Trevor More Than the Earth

Does Superman Love Anyone That Much?

In Wonder Woman #21 by Tom King, Guillem March, and Clayton Cowles, Batman is still recovering from being attacked, leaving Diana to solve the case of who murdered Ares by herself. Wonder Woman speaks with her mother about the case and Hippolyta isn’t giving her daughter very much help to help Diana clear the elder Amazon’s name. However, she does tell Wonder Woman that the dagger used to kill Ares was forged by the god of volcanoes and smithery, Hephaestus.

The case of the murdered god begins in Wonder Woman #20, on sale now!

Wonder Woman makes her way to Hephaestus’ forge to interrogate the god herself, but the deity is far too busy with his work to pay her any mind. However, Diana doesn’t take being brushed off kindly and uses the dagger in question to pierce Hephaestus’ hand to make him stop working. As Hephaestus tends to his wound, Wonder Woman continues questioning him, telling him she knows that Hephaestus wasn’t in his home at the time of the murder and that he knew the dagger was in Hippolyta’s possession, causing the god to snap and demand Wonder Woman leave.

...she loved him more than the Earth.

Wonder Woman returns to Batman to catch him up on all she’s learned, but takes a break to ask her friend a personal question. Bruce tells Diana a story about how some League would tease Steve Trevor about being the guy who dated Wonder Woman. But Batman reveals that whenever they’d pick on him, Steve always had the same answer. Steve would tell them the only difference between him and Wonder Woman was that he loved her more than the stars, while she loved him more than the Earth.

Superman Values the Earth More Than Anything, Even Love

For Wonder Woman, Love is Everything

Superman is a kind and comionate man, and he’s definitely got a lot of love to share. But while Wonder Woman is the type of person to freely it she loves someone more than the Earth, could anyone seriously see Superman saying the same thing? After all, for Clark, the Earth is everything. It’s his identity, it’s his home, and in many ways, it is what he loves the most. That’s not to say the people in his life aren’t important, but Superman is always going to put the Earth first.

...Superman and Wonder Woman fundamentally couldn’t work as a couple.

This line is a good reminder of why Superman and Wonder Woman fundamentally couldn’t work as a couple. Wonder Woman has boundless love for others and she deserves someone who can reciprocate that. That’s not to say Superman can’t love (just ask Lois), but when it comes down to brass tacks, Clark isn’t going to put one person above all people, even his greatest love. Neither perspective is inherently wrong, per se, but it does explain why Superman and Wonder Woman were never going to make it as a true power couple.

Wonder Woman #21 is available now from DC Comics.
