Update: The Wonka trailer has now released online.
The first images for Wonka reveal Hugh Grant as a small Oompa-Loompa and see Timothée Chalamet embracing his role as Willy Wonka. The musical follows a young Willy Wonka before he opens up his famous chocolate factory from Roald Dahl's book Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Now, revealing more about Wonka and showing off a closer look at the movie.
The images include Grant as a tiny Oompa-Loompa in a glass jar, while also teasing musical sequences led by Chalamet. One image also shows a new character, Noodle (Calah Lane), floating in the air, holding Wonka's hand.
What To Expect From Wonka
Wonka is written and directed by Paul King, best known for writing and directing Paddington and Paddington 2. Alongside Chalamet, Grant, and Lane, the Wonka cast also features the likes of Keegan Michael-Key, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, Natasha Rothwell, and Tom Davis, among others. Paterson Joseph will also star in the movie as Arthur Slugworth, one of Wonka's rival chocolate makers.
Wonka promises to be a fun film showing off the early days of Willy Wonka's chocolate business 25 years before the events of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Because the feature will be a precursor to the original story, it will likely show how Wonka becomes a reclusive factory owner. With Chalamet previously confirming he has seven musical numbers in the movie, Wonka will be crafting a journey reminiscent of the Gene Wilder-led 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory film adaptation.
While not much is known about the story of Wonka just yet, a Wonka trailer is expected soon. This means the newly-released images will likely have more context to them soon. For now, though, it seems Wonka will be attempting to capture the magic of the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory while having an identity uniquely its own.
