World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is the ninth expansion in the 18-year-old game's lineup and may leave many people wondering if it's a good entry point for new players. World of Warcraft remains one of the most popular MMORPGs and continues to have people picking it up for the first time. Whether the Dragon Isles are the best place to begin a WoW adventure is up for debate though.

The Dragonflight expansion brought exciting changes to WoW - such as a new race that is highly customizable, the dragonriding skill, innovative updates to the UI, and revamped professions and talents just to name a few. Some of these things, especially the UI, could be very useful to a new player and, of course, the idea of playing in a land filled with talking dragons is enticing. There is a lot more to the expansion which could feel like an overload, however, especially the story which has grown and developed for almost two decades.

WoW: Dragonflight's Lore & Complicated Mechanics Isn't Ideal For New Players

A person new to WoW could easily be confused and frustrated with Dragonflight bringing to a head an immense amount of history that has been slowly building over many years of expansions and growth. This is particularly true if they were to jump immediately to the Dragonflight expansion by making their first character be of the new Dracthyr race in WoW which starts at level 58. Blizzard does a good job of explaining along the way, however, the sheer volume of lore brought to the forefront could be a bit burdensome for a new player.

Additionally, there is a lot to learn in playing World of Warcraft. The various combat mechanics of a character combined with professions systems, understanding the UI mechanics, and basic gameplay can be complicated enough by themselves. Add to that the new dragonriding skill with complex physics and controls, and it would be a lot for anyone to take on their first time playing a game.

New Players Should Start With Other WoW Expansions While They Level To Dragonflight

That is not to say that people who are interested in playing World of Warcraft should not try it, however. In fact, Dragonflight added many features to the game which would make it much easier for a new player. For instance, Dragonflight made changes to classes and talent trees to make them much easier to utilize and the UI and HUD are now customizable, so they can be tweaked to fit a person's play style in WoW.

A new player coming to WoW for the first time would be better off starting with a character that begins at level one and simply enjoy taking their time learning the game as they go. That way, by the time they reach level 60 and enter the Dragon Isles, they will be much better prepared. World of Warcraft is a massive, yet wonderful, game with a lot to offer to new players. There is no need to rush to the Dragonflight content immediately when there is so much else to enjoy.
