At Motorola's mega event in China on Thursday, the company launched multiple smartphones, including the Moto X30 Pro — the world's first handset with a 200MP camera. Alongside the X30 Pro, canceled at the last moment without any explanation.
Motorola has been teasing its 200MP camera phone for weeks and even confirmed some of its critical tech specs — including the processor – before launch. However, the pièce de résistance of the new device is its 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP1 primary image sensor which was initially announced last year. Motorola is known for using high-res image sensors in its flagship smartphones, having used Samsung's 108MP camera in its Edge 20 Pro last year. So given Motorola's love for high-res cameras in its smartphones, it's not surprising that its latest smartphone now uses the all-new 200-megapixel sensor.
The Moto X30 Pro is Motorola's latest mainstream flagship smartphone and comes with high-end hardware. That includes Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM alongside up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The X30 Pro also features a 6.67-inch FHD+ 144Hz OLED display with HDR10+ and 1,200 nits of peak brightness. In addition, it has an integrated, under-display fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device.
200MP Image Sensor
Regarding imaging options, the primary 200MP camera has a 1/1.22-inch sensor size with an f/1.95 aperture, OIS and 16-in-1 pixel binning as part of a new technology called ChameleonCell, which switches between two-by-two, four-by-four, and full pixel layouts depending on the scene. In low light, the camera can bin its pixels to 2.56µm in size to shoot photos at 12.5MP resolution. It can also shoot 50MP photos with 1.28μm pixels or at the full 200MP with 0.64μm pixels. In addition, it can shoot up to 8K videos at 30fps. The other two cameras include a 50MP ultrawide shooter and a 12MP Sony IMX663 telephoto unit. Lastly, a 60MP Omnivision OV60a sensor is on the front for selfies and video chats.
Other hardware features include a 4,610 mAh battery with for 125W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging. On the software side, the Moto X30 Pro runs Android 12 with MyUI 4.0 on top. The device is available in black and white color options and is priced starting at 3,699 yuan (around $548) for the base 8GB+128GB model. The 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB variants are priced at 4,199 yuan (around $623) and 4,499 yuan (around $668), respectively. The Moto X30 Pro has only been launched in China for now but is rumored to be released globally as the Moto Edge 30 Ultra later this year.
