Now that the dragons have returned to the Dragon Isles in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, the throne of the Black Dragon Aspect is noticeably vacant, and both Wrathion and Sabellian are vying for that leadership position. The head of the black dragons previously had been Neltharion before he became the infamous Deathwing and caused the Cataclysm. Both Wrathion and Sabellian claim they are the rightful heirs to the throne and players are given a chance to align with one or the other.

This battle for leadership of the black flight is an exciting change that Dragonflight brings to WoW lore. Players get to once again watch an important piece of Azeroth's future unfold before them and participate, in a way, through the Allegiance to One quest. Choosing which dragon to then leads to a weekly quest, Keys of Loyalty, and ultimately the Obsidian Citadel event. As players gain reputation with their chosen dragon leader, rewards that are unique to either Wrathion or Sabellian become available.

Wrathion Is The Better Choice For The Good Of Azeroth

Longtime players have watched Wrathion grow throughout the history of World of Warcraft beginning as an egg that players helped to protect from Deathwing's malevolence. The Black Prince witnessed what Neltharion and the black dragonflight had caused and felt it was his mission as the only pure black dragon to destroy the corruption of his kind. Players have had the opportunity to follow pieces of his story interwoven through the lore of World of Warcraft in Cataclysm, Mists of Panderia, Warlords of Draenor, Legion, Battle for Azeroth, and now in Dragonflight. Over the years Wrathion has proven that he remains true to his oath to stand in defense of Azeroth.

WoW Dragonflight: Wrathion's Allegiance Rewards

For many players, the items provided from reputation gains will determine which of the dragons to swear allegiance to, and the rewards offered are significant. In this case, pet collectors will still want to choose Wrathion as he can provide an Obsidian Proto-Whelp pet that Sabellian does not have. Each prospective leader requires players to rise through levels of reputation, and it is interesting to note that there is nothing actually stopping players from switching between providing loyalty to Wrathion and Sabellian from week to week.

What this choice will mean for the future of WoW: Dragonflight is left to be seen, as it will inevitably be answered in future updates whether Wrathion or Sabellian will become the Black Dragon Aspect. Sabellian is a bit more unknown to players in World of Warcraft's history than Wrathion. He is the son of Deathwing and hid for decades in Outland ruling the remaining black dragons in the mountains. His commitment seems centered fully on gaining power rather than protecting the greater good of Azeroth. For reputation rewards, Sabellian doesn't offer a pet as Wrathion does, but he does present a cloth armor transmog ensemble which many may find enticing.

WoW: Dragonflight's Best Dragon Customizations

Another interesting note is that many of the appealing rewards for dragon customization are actually available from both Wrathion and Sabellian. With World of Warcraft giving players unique dragon mounts and teaching them to fly with the Dragon Riding skill, these customizations are another fun collectible that players can use to set themselves apart from others. The various Dragonflights offer many customizations, but these black dragon rewards could be rarer due to requiring players to reach the Fang reputation level before having the option to purchase them.

The decision on whether Wrathion or Sabellian deserves to rise to power as the Black Dragon Aspect could be looked at from simply which of the revealed Dragonflight rewards are best, or taking on a role-playing perspective. Either way, Wrathion is the best choice. He has proven himself of having the intent to protect Azeroth rather than simply looking out for himself and gaining power. Additionally, gaining reputation with him can provide players with a special pet that is unique to his quest. That said, if players are wanting to collect all the available transmogs and items from both Wrathion and Sabellian's quartermasters, there is nothing to stop them from ing both.

Wrathion and Sabellian both feel they are the rightful heirs to lead the black dragonflight and sit on the throne as Black Dragon Aspect. World of Warcraft: Dragonflight players are given the choice to one or the other based on whatever reasoning they want (as long as the WoW servers aren't down again), and everything seems to point to Wrathion being the better option. He has been there for Azeroth through many expansions and is known to be a purified black dragon. Plus, he provides a cute pet as a reward.
