Summary

  • Players can claim Epic-tier gear weekly in WoW's The War Within via Special Assignment quests.
  • Special Assignments require completing timed world quests for loot, with limits on gear rewards.
  • Seasoned Adventurer's Caches offer high-tier gear, making the new Special Assignments worthwhile.

expansion pack to be released for WoW, set in Khaz Algar, a subterranean supercontinent within Azeroth. Players will take on some of the toughest content in WoW yet, with a raised level cap and new Hero Talents to help them along.

But levels up to 80 and Hero Talents can only pull so much weight. In order to hold their own, players will need a solid stash of high-tier gear, especially if they have multiple alts across different classes and specializations. Thankfully, The War Within provides an easy new way to get Epic gear, but players will need to know what to look out for.

WoW's New Special Assignment Quests Reward Epic Items

How To Get Seasoned Adventurer's Caches In The War Within

Players can obtain two pieces of high-tier gear every week in WoW: The War Within simply by completing quests labeled "Special Assignments" on the world map. These quests can be easily identified by the locks on their icons, as seen in the image above. These sometimes reward players with Seasoned Adventurer's Caches, each of which contains a high-value (often Epic-tier) piece of gear. These have high item levels that can often be upgraded into the high 500s, and may help players cheese some of the expansion's more difficult content.

How Special Assignments Work In WoW: The War Within

Requirements & Limits

But before players can complete a Special Assignment, they'll have to find one and understand how it works. Each Special Assignment has a simple, if stringent requirement - players must complete a certain number of timed world quests in a particular area before the timer expires, at which point they'll unlock access to their Seasoned Adventurer's Caches. Special Assignments operate on timers, and players may only have a few days in which to complete them. However, once one disappears, another is likely to pop up almost immediately.

Of course, Seasoned Adventurer's Caches have their limits. Players can repeat the Special Assignment quests as many times as they like, but they'll only receive gear the first two times they complete them. For each subsequent completion, they'll be rewarded with Restored Coffer Keys. These can be used to unlock Bountiful Coffers, which may contain high-tier equipment (plus radiant echoes, bonus currencies, or curios) themselves. So these can be worthwhile missions even after players have already farmed their weekly Seasoned Adventurer's Caches.
