The team behind WWE 2K22 has posted two screenshots of the multi-time world champion Edge in the game's engine, along with the teaser for an announcement on the game during the  SummerSlam pay-per-view on Sunday. WWE 2K22 has not received a formal release date as of yet despite the promise of coming soon. Developer Visual Concepts and the 2K team had gone silent for over a month prior to the reveal of these screenshots.

Visual Concepts first announced the next entry in the WWE 2K series during Wrestlemania 37, showing off a gameplay trailer depicting work-in-progress renderings of superstars Rey Mysterio and Cesaro duking it out in the ring. Since then, announcements regarding the game have arrived inconsistently. Periodic shorts from the 2K team featuring behind-the-scenes looks of WWE superstars participating in motion-capture and the base model for entrance animations have cropped up, keeping up some steam for a conversation on the game. Reports abound of an experience unlike the last game in the series, which alienated gamers due to a mess of glitches.

WWE 2K20 left a sour taste in the mouths of gamers for its plethora of immersion and game-breaking glitches. The game's MyPlayer mode also struck out with fans for the goofy scenarios and dialogue tied to the main characters, and the combat system over-complicated matches to the point where errors proved easy and happened often. If Visual Concepts takes these criticisms of 2K20 and other glitch-maligned entries like 2K18 to heart, it could lead to one of the wrestling games ed for the right reasons, despite the rumored absence of fan-favorite Daniel Bryan.

The WWE 2K22 announcement at SummerSlam 2021 will surely leave an impression on the wrestling gaming world, for better or for worse. But this post by the 2K team appears to promise the former. Whether or not the announcement includes comprehensive changes to the game's modes or just a release date, it will set the wrestling world abuzz up until the true release of the game.
