X-Force Movie Is About A Different Kind of Mutant Team

X-Force Shatterstar and Peter along with Deadpool in Deadpool 2

While Professor X's vision of cooperation between humans and mutants means the X-Men are more of a peacekeeping outfit, the X-Force comic takes a more black-ops approach. Created by Rob Liefeld as a more mature version of The New Mutants, the team first appeared in 1991's The New Mutants #100. The major difference the film will have from the page is that Cable leads the group originally, whereas Wade appears to be assembling the various anti-heroes in Deadpool 2.

Characters from Deadpool 2 Will Return for X-Force Movie

Deadpool 2 End Credits with Cable and Domino

Given that Deadpool 2 introduces the concept of team, it's assumed many of the characters in the former film will appear in X-Force. For now, however, we know that leads Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin will be back as Deadpool and Cable respectively. Domino will be in X-Force as well, with Zazie Beetz reprising her role from Deadpool 2.

Along with the core trio from Deadpool 2, X-Force is bound to feature some new characters. We don't have any confirmation of who will appear beside Deadpool, Cable, and Domino, but it's likely more characters from the comic book team will be featured. Popular choices are Psylocke, played by Olivia Munn in X-Men: Apocalypse, and Fantomex, who's yet to appear in the XCU.

Drew Goddard X-Force

Fan-favorite Drew Goddard is writing and directing the X-Force movie, finally bringing his comic book history to the big screen. For years, Goddard has helped to craft Sony's proposed Daredevil before exiting the series early on. With X-Force, he'll finally be able to bring his skills from Cabin in the Woods and The Martian to the world of anti-heroes.

The Story of X-Force

Deadpool 2 Post Credits Scene

With Deadpool 2 just hitting theaters, we don't yet know the story of X-Force. But what we have heard is that X-Force will come before Deadpool 3. That means any threads from Deadpool 2, along with the continuation of the newly formed team, will be explored in X-Force before anything else. We also know that Fox has plenty of plans for Josh Brolin as Cable, so it's likely that X-Force will explore more of his backstory and better establish his place on the team.

How Deadpool 2 Sets Up the X-Force Movie

Deadpool and the X-Force team prepare to jump out of a plane in Deadpool 2

The biggest way that Deadpool 2 sets up X-Force is by introducing the titular team. Pulling together various characters from the comics (many of which have appeared on X-Force or similar outfits), Cable's arrival sees Wade uniting a group of non-traditional heroes. Though their aims are ultimately altruistic, X-Force is known for its brutal tactics. As such, much of the violence and action from the Deadpool franchise will carry over into X-Force - not to mention all the story threads set up in Deadpool 2.

The History of the X-Force Movie

X-Force Concept Art Cable Domino Warpath Feral

The history of the X-Force movie dates back to 2013 when Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) was brought aboard to write and direct the movie. Ultimately, Wadlow's X-Force movie fell apart and Drew Goddard was brought in to flesh out the Deadpool spinoff. Along with Deadpool, Domino, and Cable, characters meant to appear in the original X-Force film included Warpath, Feral, and Cannonball. The latter mutant will be introduced in The New Mutants, but there's a good chance the other characters will show up in Goddard's X-Force.

There's No Trailer Yet for the X-Force Movie

Deadpool 2 Spoilers Discussion

A trailer for X-Force hasn't been released yet, but that makes sense considering it hasn't even begun production. In fact, there's not even an official release date for the film. But the critical and financial success of Deadpool 2 and the fact that X-Force will precede another sequel means 20th Century Fox likely won't wait long to announce something. There are a few mutant movies already on the books, but X-Force may just be fast-tracked following the success of the team in Deadpool 2.

A Poster Hasn't Been Released for the X-Force Movie Either

Deadpool 2 Movie Review

There's no poster yet for X-Force, but something could be forthcoming. Deadpool 2 has defied the typical marketing strategy for a blockbuster by releasing tons of images, posters, and other content related to the movie and character. As such, it wouldn't at all be surprising for an early X-Force poster to be released confirming the returning team. If nothing else, there's plenty of posters featuring Deadpool, Cable, and Domino that serve as de facto promotion for X-Force.
