A few years ago and before the first Deadpool 2, with the group already named and identified in the latest trailer for the movie. Reflecting on the missed opportunity, the filmmaker recently revealed exactly why the film was never made and his plans for the characters.

First appearing in New Mutants #100 in 1991, X-Force were a more confrontational version of the X-Men and regularly incorporated massive fan favorites such as Wolverine, Deadpool, and Cable. Back in 2013 and just coming off movie being directed/written by Drew Goddard, Wadlow's version of the characters will never be seen.

While promoting his Blumhouse horror movie Truth or Dare, Wadlow spoke to Collider about why his X-Force film was never made:

"...my X-Force movie was much more focused on Cable and the New Mutants becoming this paramilitary unit. So, Fox was trying to decide whether they going to do the Deadpool solo movie or my X-Force movie. Fortunately, they picked the Deadpool solo movie because it’s great. Fortunately for the world, I should say, but unfortunately for me. But, I have no complaints about the process. I’m a huge fan of Ryan’s and I loved the Deadpool solo movie. I’m super excited for Deadpool 2. It’s a little bit of a bummer, but that’s life in the big leagues.”

It's cool that Wadlow harbours no grudges against the studio or the way things turned out, although it would have been interesting to see what directions the plot may have taken, when compared to Tim Miller's hilarious take on the associated characters. Wadlow also mentioned that he wanted his X-Force to be the mutants who didn't have the of Charles Xavier, and that they were "the kids that don’t have a jet swooping down to help them." It's an interesting spin on the X-Universe and seems close to the direction that New Mutants.

Meanwhile the new version of the team is apparently being set-up for an ongoing franchise that may steer away from any future Deadpool movies. Any complications regarding the rumors pointing to a Fall shoot. So while Wadlow's vision for the team may have vanished, it looks like they will still be launching a multiple attack on theaters over next few years. More news on X-Force as we get it.
