The X-Men have had a lot of unique adventures since their debut in the early 60s. Some of their strangest episodes concern their often very complicated team romances. The X-Men are in many ways a soap opera, and that's particularly evident in the love lives of the many of the X-Men.

Romance in Marvel Comics is often strange, as is the case of fellow Marvel mates the Fantastic Four for example, but no other Marvel team has the pure amount of strange the X-Men do. The relationships can be fun, weird, and in many cases, dark in ways that aren't healthy for anyone involved.

Storm And Doctor Doom

Storm shares a drink with Doctor Doom in X-Men comics.

It's easy to see how anyone could be intrigued by Storm, but it's unusual how she would be intrigued in any way by Doctor Doom, one of the most heinous Marvel villains.

Nevertheless, the two had a brief moment of mutual interest back in the 70s. In X-Men #145 written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Dave Cockrum, Storm travels to Doom's castle in Latveria to rescue Arcade, a villain who actually has the rest of the X-Men hostage in his Murderworld. There she and Doom find each other's company more compelling than either expected.

Magneto And Rogue

The romance between Magneto and Rogue, both in the main Marvel continuity of Earth-616 and in the classic 90s storyline Age Of Apocalypse, left some readers cold. It didn't make sense that Rogue, deeply committed to Professor X's dream of a peaceful world, would ever go for Magneto, even if he could use his magnetic powers to let them touch.

Magneto is at times a hero, and currently resides on the Quiet Council of Krakoa in the Dawn Of X era, but at the time their relationship kindled in the early 90s, he was truly a villain who at one point ripped all the adamantium out of Wolverine's body in the Fatal Attractions crossover.

Wolverine And Charlemagne

Wolverine's romance with Charlemagne is strange mostly in that it comes out of nowhere. She's introduced in the Spider-Man Vs. Wolverine one-shot in 1987 as an old flame of Wolverine's.

Their past is mysterious and their future short as she ultimately dies at the end of the issue - inadvertently at the hands of Spider-Man, in a truly heartbreaking fashion -  and is never really mentioned again. She's one of a number of tragic romances for Wolverine in his life, including Mariko and Itsu.

Beast And Jean Grey

Jean is famously connected to Wolverine and Cyclops, but they're not the only X-Men she's been in love with. In X-Men Forever, an alternate reality continuation of legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont's run on the title, Jean and Beast were a couple.

Their romance goes back to their early days on the team in the sense Hank felt something for Jean, but it was never reciprocated. In this different take on X-history, Jean does and things go differently. The series only lasted a year, though, and doesn't fall into the canon.

Emma Frost And Cyclops

One relationship that is very much canon is Cyclops and Emma Frost, the White Queen. This complicated relationship started in the early 2000s, during Grant Morrison's run of the New X-Men. Early on, Emma mentally impersonated Jean to Scott. After Jean died a second time, the two became lovers.

Scott has questionable judgment when dating someone, but Emma's affection for him was real. It also served to humanize her, even if on some level it was calculated, and it led to a lot of conflict within the team. Still, for many, there are one of the X-Men's greatest couples.

Kitty Pryde And Colossus

X-Men's Colossus and Kitty Pryde hugging in Marvel Comics

Kitty Pryde and Colossus are often thought of as one of the favorite X-Men couples, but in many respects, they're an unlikely pair. That was underlined when Kitty and Piotr got to the altar but didn't get married. They have a genuine love and respect for each other, but their relationship was forged at a time when Kitty was very young.

She was thirteen years old when they met, and her general romantic trajectory has been getting very close to men like Piotr and Star-Lord before eventually leaving them. The one person Kitty always goes back to is Rachel Summers, a relationship Marvel Comics may finally be ready to acknowledge with since Kitty has since come out as bisexual.

Juggernaut And She-Hulk

One of the most unforgettable relationships in X-Men history is between traditional X-villain Juggernaut and Avenger She-Hulk. It was highly unusual given Juggernaut is almost always a villain capable of awful things, and Jennifer Walters is a seminal hero, part of the Avengers and Fantastic Four.

This unlikely connection happened in Uncanny X-Men #435, written by Chuck Austen and drawn by Ron Garney. It happened after Jennifer represented Juggernaut in court and is generally regarded as a low moment in the books from the early 2000s period. This is one She-Hulk comic storyline the MCU should probably avoid.

Cyclops And Madelyne Pryor

Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops and Madelyn Pryor from Marvel Comics

Jean Grey is the love of Scott Summers' life, and her death in the Dark Phoenix Saga tore him apart. Cyclops left the X-Men and then promptly met and married Madelyne Pryor. The only issue was Madelyne looked and acted just like Jean Grey, something that his former teammates commented on right away.

Scott left her for Jean Grey when she returned in the mid-80s. It was later revealed Madelyne was a clone of Jean Grey designed by Mr. Sinister. She died after becoming the Goblin Queen and trying to drag the world into a hell dimension.

Rogue And Gambit

X-Men teammates Rogue and Gambit are a classic on-and-off-again relationship. The two bicker as much as they kiss, and they've had a huge number of ups and downs over their nearly thirty-year romance. They even got married back in 2018, but the relationship is odd in that it's arguably not very healthy at all.

Gambit is not exactly trustworthy, using his hypotonic charm on women more than once in the comics. Rogue is a former villain who has deep trust issues. The two shouldn't work at all, but somehow seem to when other classic relationships don't.

Storm And Quicksilver

Storm And Quicksilver Age Of Apocalypse

Storm is a woman of immense grace and patience, which makes it strange that she would pair up with the impatient and hot-tempered Quicksilver, brother of the Scarlet Witch.

But they were a couple in the Age Of Apocalypse alternate universe. The alternate reality allows for the relationship to happen as this Quicksilver is much more mature, as a result of his bitter life experience. His sister died early in the wars against Apocalypse. It's also strange the relationship doesn't get more than a few references before both appear to die in the final battle.
