Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Wolverine #46! Before X-Men, he was a soldier within Weapon X, where he and his team of trained killers would be deployed all over the world and neutralize their enemies - no matter who or what that enemy was. Sometimes they toppled governments, sometimes they eradicated revolutionaries, and sometimes they would assassinate those with the means to make real change in the world. It didn’t matter, anyone Logan was pointed at by Weapon X, Wolverine would kill. And now, that version of Wolverine has finally been brought to life in absolutely jaw-dropping cosplay.

In a Reddit post within the subreddit r/cosplay by mikedastardly, the cosplayer shows off their expertly crafted costume inspired by Wolverine as a Weapon X operative. The bulky yellow/golden plates of armor and giant pouches that could seemingly only ever make sense in a comic book are naturally brought to life, along with Wolverine’s red Weapon X visor and oversized pistol.

The cosplayer takes Wolverine’s mutation into as well, as they’re brandishing Wolverine’s bone claws, given that Wolverine didn’t have his bones coated in adamantium until his time with Weapon X came to a violent end. Plus - perhaps most importantly of all - the cosplayer offers their own level of intensity to truly bring this comic book costume to life. The vicious, snarling look on their face is a perfect representation of how dangerous Wolverine was during this time in his life, tying together the entire cosplay perfectly.

Weapon X Cosplay Revisiting Wolverine’s Villainous Era Coincides with Marvel Comics Continuity

The timing of this cosplay being shared on social media is especially well-placed, as it’s bringing this old-school Wolverine costume to the forefront of fans at the exact same time as Marvel Comics. The latest issue of Wolverine puts Logan face-to-face with Sabretooth during the ongoing Sabretooth War, but rather than ripping Victor Creed to pieces like he wanted to, Wolverine actually s him.

Sabretooth uses the psychic powers he stole from Quentin Quire to make Wolverine believe he’s back in Weapon X, complete with his original uniform and borderline villainous alliance with Sabretooth. Sabretooth is using Wolverine as his own personal weapon, all while Wolverine believes he’s still working as a Weapon X operative. The difference in perspective makes for interesting visual storytelling, as fans get to see Wolverine in action as a Weapon X soldier despite the fact that it’s not real. And in a way, that’s exactly what this cosplay offers fans within the realm of live-action.

Weapon X Cosplay Gives Fans What the X-Men Movies Never Did

This clip is from X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), featuring Logan and the other of the Weapon X strike force going on their first mission. It was shared on YouTube by Filmey Box.

While X-Men Origins: Wolverine showed Logan on a Weapon X strike force, and X-Men: Apocalypse showed him escaping the Weapon X facility following his adamantium bonding, none of the films featured Wolverine in his comic-accurate Weapon X uniform. The iconic gold plating and bulking design made famous by the late 80s, early 90s aesthetic of comic book artwork is why this particular suit is so beloved - and this cosplayer finally gave X-Men fans what the movies never did.

From bringing back a classic Wolverine costume at the same time as Marvel Comics, to doing so in live-action before even the X-Men films, this Weapon X cosplay is an astounding piece of artwork that finally brings Wolverine’s deadliest era to life.

Wolverine #46 by Marvel Comics is available March 27, 2024.
