For five years the Krakoan Age has brought X-Men fans expansive, complex, and beautiful stories about the mutants of Marvel, and their final mission is now coming to a close.
As Xavier and his team battle the Enigma Dominion across time and space, the core X-Men teams are taking the fight directly to Orchis to save their future, and what comes next for the mutants is still incredibly murky.
X-Men #35, recently revealed by the talented Pepe Larraz.
The Krakoan Experiment Is Finally Officially Ending
Current X-Men editor Jordan D. White has referred to the Krakoan Age as a "great experiment," and it truly was half a decade of genre-bending, emotionally resonant, and uniquely impactful stories that will never be replicated again. Many fans feel truly emotional that Krakoa is ending, and they won't get more time in beloved places like the Green Lagoon, or see family days at the Summers House. Incoming editor Tom Brevoort has promised a bold and exciting new era for the X-Men, and many fans are holding out hope that it won't be a simple return to the mutant's status quo of years past.
X-Men #35 is not just celebrating the beloved Krakoan Era, but also the monumental 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men, and the decades of stories that have made the X-Men one of the most beloved superhero teams in history. The epic issue will also feature a story focusing on family by the brilliant X-Men writer Chris Claremont, a majorly important theme throughout the 16-year run Claremont had writing for the X-Men. Plus, X-Men #35 will also "offer a glimpse of things to come" for the X-Men's newest era which is planned to launch in summer 2024 after the Blood Hunt event concludes.
The X-Men's New Era Is Still Largely Unrevealed
From Jonathan Hickman's acclaimed HoX/PoX to Kieron Gillen's X-Men Forever, the X-Men have been put through the wringer during the Krakoan Era, but have also grown and developed more than in decades. The newest era of X-Men will be called "From The Ashes" and teases that Marvel has given out reveal glimpses of several possibilities for the next age, from Magneto potentially being the leader to Storm taking on some type of political role, either on Earth or perhaps even Arakko. Regardless, fans are intensely hoping that no matter what happens with Enigma and Orchis, the Krakoan Era won't be forgotten by the mutants.
Jordan D. White is quoted saying, "Krakoa will live on within us forever," and that is certainly the case for both fans and Krakoan Era creators, who will carry the lessons and growth of Krakoa for years to come. The X-Men's Krakoan Age has been lauded as a period of rich, resonant, and bold storytelling, and fans will surely come back to read the Krakoa series over and over again as time es and they become "classic" stories, all celebrated in this giant-sized final issue.
X-Men #35 from Marvel Comics debuts in stores on June 5th, 2024.
