In the issue, the titular team go after a group of space pirates who’re trying to kidnap Cyclops as ransom for the Phoenix, Jean Grey. Unfortunately for the X-Men, the pirates have prepared for all of them specifically, and despite her magical prowess, Magik is ignominiously defeated like nothing, though she comes back later to help sabotage the pirates' getaway.

Magik, Illyana Rasputin, is arguably one of the to the magic she’s learned, she also has her massive soulsword, as well as her mutant power to open ‘stepping disks’ in and out of the demonic dimension limbo in order to teleport. The problem, as X-Men #12 demonstrates, is that she’s susceptible to anything that can mess with her head before she gets a chance to use her magic. On a team of heavy hitters like this latest X-Men roster, it’s refreshing then that she’s still got things that can trip her up.

This isn’t the first time that the X-Men have been waylaid by villains with the power to give them vertigo. In fact, experiments in the Savage Land, where she hails from. She’s always more of a bit player, but if this issue shows anything, it’s that Vertigo’s power is madly underrated.

X-Men #12's temporary trouncing of the X-Men also lays bare the danger that the team are really putting themselves in. Team leader Cyclops’ argument against the US government is that if the government attack the X-Men, then he’s going to break the government before they have time to finish off the team. However, this issue shows that the X-Men are still susceptible to surprise attacks if their attackers plan ahead, so Cyclops, Magik and the other X-Men are going to have to shore up their weaknesses if they want to remain ahead of their foes.
