Warning: Spoilers for X-Corp #1
Fans of X-Men will soon get to see the team take on the ruthless world of big business in the highly anticipated X-Corp series. Straight from marvel.com's Bullpen Bulletins, X-Corp writer Tini Howard is interviewed by Brittany Matter and reveals some extra details on how mutants will be flexing their newfound global power. Written by Howard and illustrated by Alberto Foche, the new X-book will emphasize a different facet of mutantkind’s global takeover.
Focused on Warren Worthington—Angel—and Monet St. Croix, Howard promises the storyline aims to broaden and redefine readers’ conception of mutant power and the pitfalls which have arisen thanks to the rapid ascendancy of Krakoa on the galactic stage. In her words, the series is set to answer the question of “What keeps our heroes heroic with so many opportunities to sell their souls?” On the battlefield, where the X-Men are historically used to operating, the lines between ally and adversary are more firmly drawn than in the cut-throat world of industry and capital.
This series represents the latest chapter in “Reign of X”, the sequel to “Dawn of X” which ended with the conclusion of the X of Swords crossover event. Unlike the other X-teams, X-Corp is working to leverage the vast economic resources the nation of Krakoa has at its disposal against those cruel and corrupt conglomerates and one-percenters who would use their wealth to do wrong. As Howard puts it: “it’s less about making mutants more money, and more about taking resources from the truly evil.” In other words, the white-collar crime branch of the X-Men. This is shaping up to be a welcome change of pace for comic book readers who are accustomed to “mutant power” referring solely to the extraordinary abilities made manifest by the X-gene.
Howard first got to cut her teeth with the characters in the first issue of the tie-in mini-series Empyre: X-Men, which she co-wrote with the “Head of X” himself: Jonathan Hickman. The continued adventures of X-Corporation have remained in stasis ever since. With a little more than a month until the release of X-Corp #1, fans are already getting teased with gorgeous preview pages showing off the brilliant business minds of Krakoa in action. As an added bonus to fans of the former X-Factor leader, Multiple Man, it appears as though the character Howard is most excited in bringing to life in her latest series is Dr. Jamie Madrox, who—it’s worth noting—also made a memorable appearance in Empyre: X-Men #1.
X-Corp from Marvel Comics will hit shelves on May 12th. In the meantime, X-Men readers can enjoy the new preview pages embedded below:
