Warning: Spoilers for Immortal X-Men #2 ahead!
The mutant Godzilla-level threat. As one of Krakoa's War Captains, the Quiet Council expects Summers to come up with plans to save the mutants of Krakoa from any harm—including Kaiju attacks.
While Immortal X-Men #2 does not actually mention Godzilla, the terrifying reptilian monster from Japan has actually showed up several times in Marvel Comics, first with a solo Godzilla title that debuted in 1977, followed up by cameos in several books like Iron Man, Thing, and Mighty Avengers. Besides Godzilla, the Marvel Universe is home to many Kaiju-sized beasts, with the dragon-like Fin Fang Foom being its most famous, meaning Scott Summers was well within his right mind when creating his Kaiju "Summers Protocol."
Immortal X-Men #2—written by Kieron Gillen with art by Lucas Werneck—depicts the immediate aftermath of the Quiet Council rejecting Selene's bid to their group, leading to her using magic to summon a massive Kaiju-level monster created from the former gate to Otherworld, which was made up of Selene's deceased External comrades. After failed attempts at killing the beast from Magneto, Storm, and Exodus, the "former" villain Mister Sinister turns himself into a Kaiju, but only succeeds in momentarily stopping the creature from attacking Krakoa, leading the Quiet Council to call an emergency meeting. Charles Xavier and Emma Frost attempt to find a solution collectively, leading to Colossus asking if there is a "Summers Protocol" for the situation, to which Frost replies: "Oh please, it's Scott. What do you think?" Clearly, everyone knowns Cyclops has contingency plans for every situation, especially since becoming a War Captain. This exchange then leads directly into an X-Men Data Page titled "Delaying Kaiju," where Summers breaks down the best ways at keeping a Godzilla-level threat away from Krakoa.
The "Delaying Kaiju" Data Page is chock full of hilarious and self-referential comments from Scott, but what is most important is that Scott is not just telling the X-Men how to mindlessly slaughter Godzilla, instead he is showing the best ways to divert and delay the Kaiju to reduce the harm it can cause to innocents and itself. It makes perfect sense that Cyclops and the X-Men are being intentional about not just murdering any Kaiju they see, because their sentient island nation of Krakoa was also once a very angry, violent, and confused Kaiju that the X-Men fought many times. Cyclops' reasoning for attempting to "delay" Kaiju as opposed to just destroying them is because many of them are "Misunderstood Kaiju," like Krakoa was, and the mutants have come to respect and revere Krakoa and other "ultra-fauna." Excitingly, Scott also mentions the use of the X-Mech, from Gerry Duggan's X-Men #1, as a way to "swiftly neutralize" a Kaiju that cannot just be delayed, meaning that the X-Mech may be making a future appearance in an X-Men book, which would be a joy for fans of the awesome creation. Cyclops' high-level of preparation proves that he truly is a strategic mastermind, which makes him the ideal leader he was always destined to be.
At the end of the day, the External Gate Kaiju is defeated through the combined might of Destiny, Hope, and Exodus, but the "Delaying Kaiju" protocols are still a solid way of defending Krakoa against future attacks by Godzilla or other Kaiju. Cyclops of the X-Men is prepared for anything, and Immortal X-Men #2 proves that even Godzilla has something to fear from the strategic mind of Scott Summers.
Immortal X-Men #2 is available now from Marvel Comics.
