Summary

  • Nimrod poses a grave threat to mutantkind, as it has the ability to adapt and eliminate mutants in any timeline where it exists.
  • The X-Men's previous strategy of avoiding Nimrod's creation failed, and now they must face it head-on in an ultimate showdown.
  • Defeating Nimrod will require an unexpected or never-before-seen tactic, as it is an adaptable and unbeatable villain. The X-Men's future depends on defeating Nimrod.

The the ever-evolving Nimrod, however. Being at the helm of Orchis has granted the Sentinel further reach than ever before. Now, after having their Krakoan society destroyed and being left (once again) to scramble for survival, it's time for the X-Men to face Nimrod and the bleak future it promises.

Marvel has released a look at February's X-Men #31 by Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto. The issue continues mutantkind's struggle to survive in a world where anti-mutant sentiment continues to grow and Orchis is systematically eliminating anyone with an X-Gene that stands in their way. Nimrod's very existence supposedly dooms mutants, as they don't survive in any timeline where the android gets created.

THE ULTIMATE MUTANT HUNTER! The X-Men lived in fear of Nimrod’s creation, and now it’s clear why! The ultimate weapon of mutant extinction is ever-adapting, ever-evolving, with only one goal: DEATH TO MUTANTKIND!

Every encounter with Nimrod has been unexpected and the result of some kind of anomaly in time. Now, it exists in the present, and the X-Men must solve the impossible or else the Fall of X will be permanent. There is no hope of mutant survival as long as Nimrod exists.

The X-Men Won't Survive Nimrod's Future

Nimrod first appearance

Since Nimrod's introduction back in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #191 by Chris Claremont, John Romita Jr, Dan Green, and Glynis Oliver, it has kept to a single goal: eliminate mutants. Nimrod represents the absolute pinnacle of Sentinel technology, and paves the way for AI to take over the world. It adapts at a rate even the most rapid-thinking, ultra-intelligent mutants can't match, and it presents a counter to every ability and strategy available. Sentinel technology is already responsible for the Genoshan massacre, one of the biggest collective tragedies in mutant history, yet Nimrod's damage would be even more extensive. Omega-level mutants cannot defeat it, and any victories have only been temporary.

The X-Men's best strategy for defeating Nimrod was to avoid its creation entirely, but that failed back in X-Men #20. Shortly after Nimrod was developed, it was at the center of the Hellfire Gala massacre and killed several mutants before Charles Xavier banished scores of others. To say a head-on battle between Nimrod and the X-Men has been a long time coming is an understatement, and X-Men #31 is one step closer to that ultimate showdown.

Nimrod is the X-Men's Most Adaptable Villain

Nimrod Hellfire Gala

Nimrod's unmatched ability to adapt and counter makes it nearly impossible to defeat. It can't be overwhelmed, and each successful counter or brief victory is another opportunity for it to learn and advance. It has dispatched Omega-level mutants like Iceman with ease, so no normal strategy will ever be enough to take it down. Only something utterly unexpected or never-before-seen stands a chance of working, and several threads (like the resurrection of Magneto) are shaping up to make that possible. The X-Men may only have one chance to change their future, and it must begin with Nimrod's defeat.

X-Men #31 will be available on February 7, 2024 from Marvel Comics!
