Warning: spoilers for X-Men #6 ahead!

There have been months of speculation on the identity of the killed in battle. The nation of Krakoa can easily resurrect any mutant who dies, but since Scott Summers apparently died in an incredibly public way, the Quiet Council cannot resurrect him without revealing the secret of mutant immortality to the world.

Cyclops has long been viewed as the official leader of the X-Men, and that has been no different in the newest "Destiny of X" era, which saw Scott and Jean leading Krakoa's first official X-Men team. The latest relaunch of X-Men has been teasing the arrival of Captain Krakoa, a mutant variation of Captain America, for some time now, and Marvel has made it very clear that Cyclops is not at all happy about his arrival. However, while fans were led to believe that Cyclops was angry that he was being replaced as leader of the X-Men, it has now been revealed that Scott IS Captain Krakoa, and he is angry that he is being forced to change his entire identity.

In X-Men #6 - written by Gerry Duggan with art by Pepe Larraz - Scott Summers appeals to the Quiet Council to reveal Krakoa's Resurrection Protocols to the world, which is very quickly shut down before the Council votes to approve Captain Krakoa's addition to the X-Men team roster. Later Captain Krakoa attends a very public memorial service happening at the X-Men's NYC Treehouse base, with the public mourning the apparent death of Cyclops in a battle earlier in the week. It is then revealed, finally, that Captain Krakoa is Cyclops himself, apparently using Krakoan telefloronic powers, most likely from technology created by the mutant Forge who has been making a lot of innovative Krakoan plant tech lately.

Cyclops Death Mourning X-Men Captain Krakoa

Cyclops confirms that the adoption of the Captain Krakoa identity is related to his death when speaking with his teammate Synch saying, "The way... I fell was so... public... we don't have any wiggle room." This reveal will have huge ramifications on the X-Men team, and the entire nation of Krakoa, moving forward since the mutants Resurrection Protocols are so central to their ascension above humans. Scott Summers' anger and disappointment at being forced to stay dead already leads him to reach out to Ben Ulrich in this issue in an attempt to betray Krakoa and reveal mutant resurrection, but Ulrich shuts Scott down, refusing to write any story about mutant immortality. Could this lead to Scott eventually betraying Krakoa in an even more drastic way, to get back at the Quiet Council for the perceived slight against him?

While "Cyclops" might be dead to the public and officially out of the X-Men, Scott Summers is certainly still alive, and being forced to lead the X-Men team under a new identity against his will. Even though Summers tells Synch "we don't have any wiggle room," it is clear that he does NOT agree with that, or the Quiet Council's decision, and is instead staying in their good graces while he attempts to figure out how to return as Cyclops. With the Scarlet Witch's recent Cerebro and the Resurrection Protocols, Krakoa is now able to revive any mutant who has ever lived and died. The chances are that mutant resurrection is going to be a major part of the  Immortal X-Men series, so make sure to read X-Men #6 to fully understand Cyclops personal and political motives around resurrection and keep reading the series to learn the full backstory of Captain Krakoa's creation.
