Warning: Light spoilers for A.X.E.: Judgment Day #1 ahead

With the the Eternals' attack on the X-Men shows that they have been too complacent.

The X-Men's origins began as students at Charles Xavier's secret school for mutants, a school which greatly expanded under Grant Morrison's tenure on New X-Men to include a much larger student body, some who were taught how to fight like X-Men, but all of whom were taught how to survive as mutants. The promise of Krakoa's utopia caused Xavier's school to not be reopened on Krakoa, a lapse in judgment that may have just caused many mutants their lives. While mutant resurrection is now a staple of X-Men, the entire point of the Eternals' attack on Krakoa was to slaughter the Five to try and remove the mutants' immortality.

Way back in X-Men #11 (2019) - by Jonathan Hickman and Leinil  Francis Yu - Cyclops discusses mutant training, stating that while he acknowledged the attempt to "create an atmosphere that is serene and non-militaristic" that the number of mutants training on Danger island (a new "Danger Room") is "clocking in at less than two percent" of Krakoa's population. Since it has been established that many Krakoan mutants have non-offensive abilities, he suggests that while not everyone should need to be proficient in using their powers aggressively, Krakoan leaders could do "a little more," to prepare Krakoan mutants for a future attack. Thankfully both the Cotati's attack of Krakoa and the X of Swords event did not involve the loss of many mutant lives, but this may have made the Quiet Council even more complacent, instead relying solely on established mutant teams like X-Force, Hellions, and the X-Men to protect Krakoa, they could have been making all mutants prepared to defend their new home from the Eternals attack in A.X.E.: Judgment Day #1, written by Kieron Gillen with art by Valerio Schiti and Marte Garcia.

Mutant Training and Eternals Attack

While it is commendable that the leaders of Krakoa do not want to turn into a military state, that doesn't mean they don't have a responsibility to prepare mutant citizens for the external attacks that they knew would come. after the entity Danger was separated from it, of course) was an important way to train new mutants to how to harness their abilities to keep them safe and the nation of Krakoa has an entire island dedicated to its use as a Danger Room, one that is clearly not being utilized well by the population of Krakoa.

The Quiet Council and X-Men were right to not force Krakoan citizens to get trained in warfare at Xavier's School, but if the percentage of trained mutants on Krakoa went up even from 2% to 8%, there is a chance that dozens of mutants could have been saved in the Eternals rampage.
