Warning: Spoilers for X-Men: Hellfire Gala 2022 ahead
The Moira, now in her new evil cyborg form, is wildly manipulative so she almost certainly came to the Gala for more than just her son, but her unabashed cruelty just elevated her to becoming the worst mother in Marvel Comics.
Honestly, becoming the worst mother in Marvel Comics is a pretty impressive feat, seeing as there are scores of other horribly mothers like Mystique, who literally tried to kill Nightcrawler as a baby, or the Runaway's parents as the evil collective The Pride. Yet ever since Jonathan Hickman's House of X/Powers of X it has slowly become clearer and clearer that Moira's former mutant power of restarting her life has made her top that list by a wide margin.
Ever since Inferno, Moira X has been on a one-woman crusade to tear down the nation of Krakoa and destroy mutantkind. In doing so she has now partnered with not only Orchis, but she is also now siding with Druig of the Eternals as he attempted to wipe out the mutants in the A.X.E.: Judgment Day event. Moira's biological son Proteus, a complex mutant born of Moira's marriage to a heavily abusive man, was a major villain throughout much of the late 70s and 80s, a powerful being with reality manipulation and possession powers who Moira kept locked in a cage "for his own good" for much of his life. In the Krakoan Era, Proteus has been able to stabilize his powers, healing much of his mental illness, and has become a powerful force for good as a member of the mutant resurrection circuit known as The Five. Yet in X-Men: Hellfire Gala 2022 by Gerry Dugan, Kris Anka, Russell Dauterman, Matteo Lolli, and Carlos Villa, Moira sneaks into the Gala in Mary Jane Watson's body, and finds her son and reveals to him the great secret of Inferno, while telling him that she purposefully created him as "a 3D printer... Nothing more," before confirming that she never loved him.
The major House of X retcon of Moira as a mutant has been fascinating because X-Men writers have confirmed that Moira and Charles were aware of all of her past lives since the moment they met, meaning pretty much every single X-Men comic now needs to be reexamined. Moira keeping her son locked up always seemed off, but now it makes sense: Moira and Charles worked together to identify an X-Gene that would create a mutant with reality-warping powers, because back then they already knew about their future plans for Krakoa, and how Proteus would be necessary for mutant resurrection. It seems as though Moira decided to tell Proteus, hoping the truth would set him off, but instead he rejected Moira, confirming that his new family of The Five are who truly matter to him. Proteus has thought that Moira was dead for years, as she kept her death a secret to everyone but Charles and Magneto, so the fact that she revealed herself to her son and then immediately told him that she never loved him is truly psychotic, and easily makes her Marvel's worst mother.
The terrible way that Moira X treated her son Proteus doesn't even take into the fact that she didn't even think to speak with her adopted daughter Rahne, Wolfsbane of the X-Men's New Mutants, just one more piece of evidence that Moira is without a doubt the worst mother in all of Marvel Comics.
