Weapon X-Men #2 by Christos Gage, Yildray Çinar, Nolan Woodward, and VC’s Clayton Cowles sends the mutliversal team of Wolverines to Earth-80777. In their search for Onslaught, these alternate Logans encounter Magik, confirmed by this world’s Cyclops to be the Sorceress Supreme.

Sporting a variation of her iconic black uniform, Illyana’s wardrobe is also adorned with Doctor Strange’s iconic symbol as well as his Cloak of Levitation. And while her magic ultimately proves ineffective against the power of Onslaught, this is still a fascinating glimpse into the true potential of a fan-favorite hero.

While Magik’s innate mutant ability is the power to teleport via wormholes through Limbo, she was forced to harness her mystical potential during her torturous childhood in that same demonic realm. Since then, she’s become one of the X-Men’s strongest heroes and most dangerous fighters, as her sorcery skills have meant the difference between life and death for the team several times. As such, there are few mystics within her age range who share her ultimate potential, and there’s no better successor to replace either Stephen or Clea Strange should they finally fall.

The notion that an elder version of Illyana Rasputin would serve as Doctor Stragne’s successor isn’t that far afield. After all, Earth-616’s iterations of these icons have worked closely together on more than one occasion. Not only did Strange once take Magik on as an apprentice in order to help her harness the dark magicks that threaten to consume her, but she’s even served as part of the faculty for the Strange Academy in the time since. And seeing as how Illyana is no longer pigeonholed into ruling Limbo on Earth-616, she’s got more time to continue her mystical ascension.

Thanks to the sorcery that inspired her name, Magik is one of the X-Men franchise's most powerful characters, even without the title of Sorceress Supreme. With her close ties to Doctor Strange and the overall magic community of the Marvel Universe, there are few young heroes better suited to wield the Eye of Agamotto once the time of Stephen and Clea Strange comes to an end. Until then, Magik will just have to keep fighting the good fight alongside her fellow Uncanny X-Men.
