Warning: Contains spoilers for Legion of X #8While the powerful X-Men member Pixie is a beloved queer and magical mutant for many Marvel fans, she is still an underappreciated hero, but her central role in Nightcrawler's Legion of X series is finally giving Megan the appreciation she deserves by making her a respected leader.
Megan Gwynn debuted in 2004's New X-Men: Academy X #5—an iconic era for X-Men fans in the early 2000s—as an incredibly tenacious and friendly Welsh teenager who ed the Xavier Institute and quickly became a fan-favorite new student. Megan has translucent dragonfly-like wings that allow her to fly, the mutant ability to produce hallucinogenic "pixie dust," and also has access to several forms of magic powers after several encounters with Magik and the realm of Limbo. In the "Quest for Magik" storyline, Illyana forces Pixie to allow her to sever Megan's soul in an attempt to create a new Soulsword and Blood Stones, but she is saved by her teammate Anole before the spell is complete. This interruption gives Pixie a "Souldagger," and the ability to do some magic spells, specifically teleportation. This makes her one of the most magical X-Men especially after discovering her mother is a fairy from Otherworld.
While Pixie has played a major role in many X-Men events, and even had her own solo series, she did not become an official X-Men member until the end of Wolverine and the X-Men. As a part of Kurt's team of mutants in Way of X Pixie is integral in stopping the resurrected Onslaught by stabbing the possessed mutants of Krakoa with her Souldagger. Clearly the immense bravery and skills she displays inspires Nightcrawler to make her a leader in his new group, the Legionaries. In Legion of X #8 - written by Si Spurrier with art by Netho Diaz and Federico Blee - fans of Megan get to see her fully take charge of a dangerous mission when the X-Men Angel attacks the Legionaries as a feral monster.
Pixie Has Blossomed Into A True Leader Of The X-Men
Legion of X #7 sees Kurt turning into a monstrous version of himself, but the end of the issue reveals that Warren Worthington has also been transformed. Unlike Nightcrawler, Warren is unable to control the transformation, giving into the dark monster unveiled within him. While Legion of X #8 eventually reveals that the "monsterization" of the mutants is most likely a manipulation by Nightcrawler's adopted mother Margali Szardos, Pixie does not know this when she quickly and decisively takes charge of the situation at the X-Corp offices. The X-Men Chamber and Husk both attempt to visit Angel just as the fight breaks out and, even though they're not Legionaries, after Angel escapes the offices Pixie instructs Jono and Paige to follow Warren, which the two veteran mutants do without pause. This clearly shows the immense respect and iration mutants now hold for Megan. Pixie was an integral part of saving Legion in Way of X and helping to create the community of mutant safety within the astral "Altar," and it is clear that Megan is going to continue to play a major role in X-Men comics in the years to come.
Megan Gwynn started out as an innocent but brave young mutant training to one day become an X-Men hero, but Legion of X shows Pixie is finally getting the respect she deserves from both Marvel editorial and her fellow mutants, becoming a truly inspiring mutant leader in a time when Krakoa needs them more than ever.
