It's been an especially strong year for A24, with many of its releases garnering critical acclaim and, in turn, strong Rotten Tomatoes scores, including Problemista (86%), Love Lies Bleeding (94%), Civil War (81%), Tuesday (76%), Janet Planet (85%), Sing Sing (98%, their highest score of 2024), A Different Man (92%), We Live in Time (78%), and Queer (78%) This extends to A24 horror as well, including I Saw the TV Glow (84%), MaXXXine (72%), and Heretic (91%).

But It's Still Certified Fresh

A24's new movie, Y2K, has earned the studio one of its lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores of 2024, but it's still Certified Fresh. Co-written and directed by Saturday Night Live's Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut, A24's disaster comedy follows two friends who attend a high school New Year's Eve party in 1999, and the Y2K bug actually happens, bringing technology to life and turning against humanity. Y2K's cast includes Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst, and Alicia Silverstone.

Now, after its premiere at SXSW this past March and ahead of its theatrical release in just a few days, critics are sharing their thoughts on the new A24 film. Y2K is sitting at 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is A24's second-lowest score of the year behind the horror movie The Front Room (42%). Y2K has 32 reviews at the time of writing, so the score could fluctuate as more are published.

It's One Of Their Weaker Releases Of 2024

Y2K reviews praise the A24 film for its ambition and boldness, though it falters in juggling its chaotic mix of genres, including horror, holiday, sci-fi, and disaster comedy. Its Rotten Tomatoes score, which is A24's second-lowest score of the year, but still Certified Fresh, is less of an indictment of the movie itself, and more of an indication of how strong the studio's output has been throughout 2024. So far, 12 of their releases have earned Certified Fresh scores, with only one of them, The Front Room, being Rotten.
