Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 7, "Croak."
Yellowjackets' present-day timeline, episode 7 takes the mystery in another direction.
More of the audio on the tape is heard in episode 7, which reveals that the recording is from the survivors' time in the wilderness. The audio captures what happened to one of the new wilderness characters, Edwin (Nelson Franklin), who was introduced in Yellowjackets season 3, episode 6's ending. Edwin is brutally murdered by Lottie (Courtney Eaton), but it is his fellow scientist, Hannah (Ashley Sutton), who is the key to solving the mystery of who has been stalking Shauna throughout season 3.
Shauna's Stalker Is The Daughter Of Hannah Finch, Who Died In The Wilderness
Hannah's Fate Was Sealed By The Yellowjackets
Unlike Edwin, who is almost immediately killed after crossing paths with the teenage survivors, Hannah spent some time with them before her death. Hannah is confirmed to have died in the wilderness, although it remains to be seen how exactly this happened. Before Hannah died, she left a tape that made its way back to her daughter. Despite the time they spent with Hannah before her death, Shauna, Misty (Christina Ricci), Taissa (Tawny Cypress), and Van (Lauren Ambrose) previously did not know that she had a daughter.

Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 7 Review: I Finally Got The Action & Gore I Was Waiting For In “Croak”
It may have taken Yellowjackets season 3 seven episodes, but the series is going in the right direction, giving us the action we've been waiting for.
Through some investigative work that impresses Misty, Shauna put the pieces together, figured out that Hannah had a daughter who has been stalking her, and locates the daughter's location in Richmond, Virginia. Due to the tape, Hannah's daughter seemingly knows about her mother's death. This means she has heard the horrific audio that recorded her mother's final moments. Such trauma gives Hannah's daughter more than enough reason to want revenge against the Yellowjackets, with the tape being a threatening warning sent to them.
What Was On The Recording That Hannah's Daughter Sent Shauna Explained
The Recording Includes A Heartfelt Message & Dark Secrets
While hiding from the Yellowjackets, Hannah records a message for her daughter, whose name is Alex. The entirety of what Hannah says is not shown, but the message's main purpose is for Hannah to let her daughter know that she loves her, with the recording serving as an emotional goodbye. Hannah also talks about how she wanted her daughter to be proud of her and to be more than just a mother who had a teenage pregnancy. At the time, her daughter was too young to understand these things, but 25 years later, that is no longer the case.
The tape is proof of what really happened in the wilderness and of the horrors committed by the survivors.
The recording also includes audio of Lottie burying an axe into Edwin's skull and the shocked reactions of everyone else who was present, including teenage Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) saying, "Holy s***." The tape is proof of what really happened in the wilderness and of the horrors committed by the survivors. Shauna wants to protect the secrets on the tape from getting out, but as a mother herself now, it is heartbreaking for Shauna to hear the message that Hannah left for her daughter, and disconcerting to hear the delighted reaction her teenage self had to Edwin being killed.
How Did Hannah's Daughter Get Ahold Of The Recording?
Someone Brought It Back From The Wilderness
Taissa mentions that both Melissa and Gen (Vanessa Prasad) got close to Hannah and that both Yellowjackets are now dead. It is left ambiguous whether Melissa and Gen die in the wilderness or if their deaths happen in the years after being rescued. If Melissa or Gen survived the wilderness, one of them may have brought the tape back to civilization and given it to Hannah's daughter. Being close to Hannah means that she could have entrusted the tape to either one of the teenage survivors.
Gen was recast for season 3 and was played by Mya Lowe in seasons 1 and 2.
Given the romantic relationship between Shauna and Melissa, it would arguably feel more consequential if Melissa was the one who brought the tape back, but this does not rule out the possibility of Gen being involved. In previous seasons, Melissa and Gen were survivors who did not receive much focus or character development. Now, not only has Melissa become a prominent character in the 1990s timeline, but she and Gen are poised to be the reason behind the primary threat that the Yellowjackets are contending with in the present day.
Why Does Hannah's Daughter Want Revenge Against Shauna 25 Years Later?
Shauna Is Being Targeted More Than The Other Survivors
Hannah's daughter wanting revenge against the Yellowjackets makes sense, but what is less clear is why this is happening 25 years later, and why she has been primarily targeting Shauna. The 25 years later could be due to the tape only recently entering her possession. If Hannah's daughter only recently got the tape, for years she would not have known what happened to her mother or about the Yellowjackets' involvement in her death. It is also possible that Hannah's daughter has had the tape for a while, but she has taken her time to carefully plot her revenge.

Find out every song that plays as the stories of Shauna, Misty, and Taissa continue in Yellowjackets season 3's past and present timelines.
As for why Shauna is mainly being targeted, it could be that she is the one who ultimately kills Hannah. By the end of Yellowjackets season 3, episode 7, Edwin's fate has been sealed, but Hannah is still alive. With Natalie Scatorccio (Sophie Thatcher) being dethroned from her leadership position, teenage Shauna is now in charge of the group, she has the power to kill Hannah, and her peers may be unable to stop her. Teenage Shauna has already expressed her belief that they can kill Hannah and the guide, Kodiak (Joel McHale), and still get rescued.

If Hannah's daughter is targeting Shauna for killing Hannah, this can also explain the mystery behind who killed the adult Lottie (Simone Kessell). Hannah's daughter may also have been revenge for Edwin, since he was close with her mother, and Lottie was the one who killed him. If Misty, Taissa, and Van aren't involved in killing Hannah, her daughter would not have had as much reason to target them. Yellowjackets season 3, episode 8 is now set up to feature a tense confrontation between Shauna and Hannah's daughter as the past continues to haunt and impact the survivors.
