Warning: Spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 3!

Yellowjackets' screaming wilderness seems to warn them about what's to come.

The group entering the cave in Yellowjackets season 3, episode 3 split up into groups, with Shauna, Van, and Akilah going in one way, as the others go in the opposite direction. While climbing through the dangerous terrain, two of their light sources go out before Van finds herself alone as her own candle goes out. In reality, Coach Ben finds them and confirms the three are suffering from side effects from some kind of poisonous gas exposure. Granted, they each suffer hallucinations before the visions oddly overlap to include Jackie.

Shauna Envisions Her Dead Son As A Young Boy

Shauna Ends Up In The Lake

Shauna sees son in Yellowjackets season 3 episode 3

Shauna's portion of the hallucination sequence is probably the most heart-wrenching, considering it features a version of her dead son. Shauna first appears floating by herself in the lake on a sunny day. What first looks like a calm and peaceful moment instantly gets interrupted when a little boy on the shore yells out "Mommy" to get Shauna's attention. The young blonde boy is the toddler version of Shauna's baby, who tragically died after she gave birth in Yellowjackets season 2.

Shauna can't reach her son before she's ultimately pulled under the water's surface.

Shauna has been understandably haunted by the death of her baby, and for a while, she believed that the others ate her infant son. While that wasn't true, the grief process hasn't been easy, leading to growing tension with the rest of the group. When Shauna sees her son in the vision, she tries to swim to him as fast as she can, but some kind of unseen power is holding her back. Like her real life with not being able to raise or even meet the boy, Shauna can't reach her son before she's ultimately pulled under the water's surface.

Van Returns To The Cabin

The Shelter Is Back

Van sitting by fire in Yellowjackets season 3 episode 3

Van's version of the hallucination shows her encountering a mysterious door in the cave. Though initially suspicious of what's on the other side of the door, Van seems relieved to find that the door leads to the cabin the group previously used as their shelter. Whereas the real cabin burned down in Yellowjackets, the one in the hallucination is in pristine condition and cozier than ever. Van is then drawn to the rocking chair in front of the lit fireplace. However, like Shauna's hallucination, the peace doesn't last long.

Yellowjackets Season 3 Continues One Of Season 2's Biggest Complaints

Yellowjackets season 3 is underway, and the show is back in fine form — but it's also continuing one of the biggest problems from season 2.

1

As the fireplace cracks, an ember flies out, hitting the carpet near Van's foot before catching fire. Van reacts to the situation only to find that the rocking chair has transformed into the enger seat of a plane. The situation gets more intense in Van's hallucination when the hands of Yellowjackets' plane crash victims start grabbing her as the cabin's fire spreads. The character eventually breaks through, but when she gets to the door, it doesn't open at first, with the fear that she will burn with the cabin this time around.

Akilah Encounters A Talking Llama

Another Yellowjackets Animal Comes To Life

Akilah talking to llama in Yellowjackets season 3 episode 3

While Shauna and Van's hallucinations are unsettling, Akilah's experience is disturbing in a totally different way. The character finds herself in the woods, drawn to the fresh berries growing nearby. After eating some, she notices a pen of farm animals that includes baby sheep, goats, and chickens, which is very different from the group's actual animal pen. As she fawns over the animals, Akilah hears a voice, but rather than a human, she's met by a talking llama. Those this may seem weird, we can't forget that Caligula transformed into a human in Yellowjackets season 2.

Yellowjackets Season 3’s Best Returning Character Cameo Just Got Way Less Likely

A brief vision in Yellowjackets season 3, episode 1 makes the return of a previous major character less likely to happen after season 2's big twists.

The llama warns Akilah that the animals bite, adding that "everything will defend itself." The creepy screeching throughout the woods returns, with the talking animal warning that "it's going to get what It wants." Akilah doesn't have much time to process what the animal is talking about because vines take hold of her feet as she's pulled into the ground until she disappears under the dirt. Before the group even enters the cave, they all hear the strange noises from the woods, adding to the mystery surrounding Yellowjackets' wilderness.

Why Jackie Appears In Shauna, Van & Akilah's Shared Hallucination In Yellowjackets Season 3

Ella Purnell Makes Another Return In Season 3

Based on season 3's trailer, we knew Ella Purnell would be back as Jackie, though it's surprising to see Jackie show up so soon in Yellowjackets season 3. Once the solo segments of Shauna, Van, and Akilah's hallucinations end, they come together for the shared portion of the nightmarish sequence. In it, the trio are back in a classroom as if nothing ever happened to them. The trio knows they are out of place, especially since they are all covered in dirt, but nobody else seems to notice them except for Jackie and Lottie.

It's no surprise that the guilt stemming from Jackie's death and the fact that the survivors ate her corpse would continue to haunt Shauna.

As Lottie stands in front of the class, Jackie plays with a snap bracelet that has Yellowjackets' wilderness symbol on it while the Man with No Eyes strolls by in the hallway. Akilah asks to try Jackie's bracelet, but when Van tries it next, it slices her arm. Shauna then gets the worst of it when Jackie snaps the bracelet around Shauna's neck, slicing her throat. Ironically, Lottie stands by the chalkboard that says, "Of all the ways to lose a person, death is the kindest," while warning the others that they will all die if they don't help Shauna.

As Shauna gasps for air in the hallucination, she wakes up in the cave, fighting for air before finding out that she, Van, and Akilah fell unconscious due to the poison in the cave. It's no surprise that the guilt stemming from Jackie's death and the fact that the survivors ate her corpse would continue to haunt Shauna. However, it's interesting that Van and Akilah are also involved in a hallucination featuring Jackie. Still, it's clear that whatever "It" is in Yellowjackets continues to be the source of the strange happenings, especially with the warnings from Lottie and the talking llama.
