The trailer for Yellowjackets season 3 is finally being released on Paramount+ with Showtime on February 14, exploring the aftermath of Natalie’s death in the present timeline and Natalie being crowned the Antler Queen in the past timeline. In both cases, the characters’ desperation to survive and keep their secrets safe will cause them to descend into deeper levels of corruption, barbarity, and no self-control.

Among the characters who seem to be impacted the most by the events of Yellowjackets season 2’s ending is Tai, with the trailer’s clips showing the character losing important parts of herself in the past and present. In the past, Yellowjackets’ season 3 trailer shows Tai holding a gun at an unknown figure before blood is seen spattering while also seeing the horrifying Man with No Eyes. In the present, Tai’s romance with Van develops further while she’s also seen smothering someone in a hospital, being attacked, and reviving an unsettling eating habit that was dropped in Yellowjackets season 2.

Yellowjackets Season 3 Reveals Adult Tai Is Eating Dirt Again After She Stopped In Season 2

Tai's Sleepwalking Alter Ego Is Back In Yellowjackets

A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it detail in Tai was eating dirt was introduced as a major twist back in Yellowjackets season 1, which started when she was a teenager trying to survive in the wilderness. Tai eating dirt was largely kept secret, and while the teens all resorted to difficult tactics to survive, this behavior was notable as she was the only survivor to eat dirt. However, it wasn’t teen Tai’s habit that was the most concerning detail, as Yellowjackets revealed adult Taissa would also still eat dirt.

While Tai’s wholesome family, political career, and straitlaced demeanor in season 1 dominated her conscious, daily persona, her lack of control at night would lead to her buried urges from the wilderness returning as she sleepwalked, ate dirt, and climbed trees.

Dirt eating is a real-world phenomenon, but Yellowjackets season 1 utilized it in Tai’s story to emphasize her malnutrition in the wilderness, dark neglected hunger no longer being sated in the present, the stress associated with her past being uncovered by Jeff’s blackmail, and the supernatural, animalistic instincts of the wilderness that still strive to overcome her in adulthood. While Tai’s wholesome family, political career, and straitlaced demeanor in season 1 dominated her conscious, daily persona, her lack of control at night would lead to her buried urges from the wilderness returning as she sleepwalked, ate dirt, and climbed trees.

These habits and haunting aspects of her time in the wilderness returning in the night contributed to Tai’s career downfall, the destruction of her family, and ultimate descent into killing with the other survivors again. However, Yellowjackets season 2 abandoned the dirt eating aspect of Tai’s story entirely in both timelines.

The full trailer for Yellowjackets season 3 includes some brutal shots of Coach Ben, making a popular theory about him look even more cruel.

Despite becoming even more desperate for food and consumed by the wilderness’ savage influence in season 2, teen Tai ended up feeding on the dead bodies of Jackie and Javi more than the earth. Despite ing the Queen of Hearts ritual and reuniting with Lottie and Van, adult Tai stopped climbing trees and only ate regular food in season 2. Therefore, the idea that Tai is eating dirt again in Yellowjackets season 3 is extremely concerning.

Why Would Tai Start Eating Dirt Again In Yellowjackets Season 3?

The Wilderness' Strong Powers Are Consuming Tai Again

Taissa holding a gun while the teens look horrified in Yellowjackets season 3.

It seemed that Tai would start eating dirt when the wilderness’ powers truly began to consume her in Yellowjackets season 1 – in both timelines. With Natalie’s death, the adults have gone through Yellowjackets’ Queen of Hearts ritual again and “fed” the wilderness, but that supernatural force certainly isn’t done with them. By making her eat dirt at night again, that power may be trying to send Tai signs to return to the wilderness, or at least to allow herself to succumb to that side of her more.

So far, Lottie is the only character who has stumbled upon Tai eating dirt in Yellowjackets' past timeline.

Back in Yellowjackets season 1, Taissa’s son Sammy called the version of her that he saw climbing the tree and eating dirt the “other one.” Since Taissa essentially turns into an entirely different person under the influence of the wilderness’ darkness as night, this seems to be an alternate, more evil personality for Tai that she must consciously push away while awake. If she’s eating dirt and losing control of herself again in Yellowjackets season 3, then the “other” Tai is presumably pushing back and trying to gain more sinister control over her – likely not just at night.

Yellowjackets Season 3 Is Bringing Back Tai's Biggest Horror Story Elements

Tai's Other Persona & The Man With No Eyes Return

Tai wandering through the night while terrifyingly eating dirt was a major example of Yellowjackets season 1 leaning into its horror genre elements, but that aspect of the story was sidelined more throughout season 2. Tai sleepwalking in Yellowjackets and eating dirt again means season 3 is going back to the show’s original horror focus, which is further emphasized by the return of another nightmare-inducing aspect of Taissa’s story.

The season 3 trailer also confirms the return of Yellowjackets’ Man with No Eyes, a horrifying figure with black holes for eyes that haunted Taissa’s nightmares. A flashback revealed that Tai’s first encounter with the Man with No Eyes happened as a young child when her grandmother was dying, and the spirit would continue to appear to her throughout her life. The Man with No Eyes’ origins, identity, and motivations remain a mystery ahead of Yellowjackets season 3, but it’s no coincidence that her visions of this haunting entity are coming back at the same time as her “other” persona.
