The Owl House, a Peabody-award-winning show that was canceled after three seasons. In spite of this, the show has gained an immense cult following, largely thanks to incorporating more LGBTQ+ representation than fans would expect from a cartoon under the Disney banner.
As she braces for future projects on the horizon, Dana Terrace has been treating fans to her own personal artwork that she's been posting to Instagram. One of her most recent drawings is of Young Hellboy, reminding fans of why the younger version of everyone's favorite demon hunter should get some new stories of his own. In fact, a Young Hellboy story penned by Terrace herself would be incredible.
The Owl House Creator Pens Young Hellboy Doodles
As the title would suggest, Young Hellboy chronicles the childhood adventures of the future Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense agent. So far, there have only been two Young Hellboy stories: 2021's Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land, and in 2023, Young Hellboy: Assault on Castle Death. Both of these four-issue miniseries were written by Mike Mignola and Tom Sniegoski, and drawn by Craig Rousseau. While the two Young Hellboy miniseries maintain the horror elements that the original character is known for, both series take a step back from that genre to showcase cuter moments that a younger demographic can enjoy. For instance, the two stories hold space for moments like Young Hellboy trying pancakes for the first time and reading comics out of Thrilling Stories Magazine.
Fans Need More Young Hellboy
Young Hellboy as both a character and a series is pretty brilliant. Not only does it offer a glimpse at the often overlooked and understated adolescent years of Hellboy, but it showcases the character through a lens that's slightly more kid-friendly without completely dumbing down the character. All things considered, it is incredibly surprising that Young Hellboy only has two miniseries under his belt so far, or even that they're both miniseries rather than giving the character an ongoing to work with.
Dana Terrace crafting some splendid fanart for Young Hellboy is as much a happy reminder of a character with potential as it is a reason for Dark Horse to revisit the character once again. Despite the short supply of content for the character, there's clearly investment in the character from audiences and, in Terrace's case, creators alike. As such, it should be something that Dark Horse should consider revisiting again sooner than later. Given her own interest in the character, bringing someone like Terrace on board isn't a bad idea either.
Her love of horror has already been well documented, both through additional fan artwork she's posted and even through The Owl House, which boasts the same horror elements and cute whimsical tone that Young Hellboy does. Plus, much like how Young Hellboy doesn't dumb down its younger audience, Owl House never strayed away from three-dimensional characters or complex storytelling despite having a TV-Y7 rating. Young Hellboy and The Owl House surprisingly go hand-in-hand, and fans remain should hopeful that both could return in some capacity.
