Warning! Spoilers ahead for Young Sheldon season 5.
Mary (Zoe Perry) and Missy's (Raegan Revord) moment in The Big Bang Theory appearance more tragic. Throughout The Big Bang Theory's 12-season run, the pair visited Pasadena multiple times, albeit separately. That was until Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy's (Mayim Bialik) wedding in season 11, when Mary and Missy finally appeared together to attend the socially-inept genius' big day.
Things are currently difficult for the Coopers in Young Sheldon season 5. Georgie's (Montana Jordan) situation with Mandy (Emily Osment) has resulted in a couple of more problems for the family, including Sheldon's mother and father. As their eldest goes through an unexpected pregnancy dilemma, Mary and George are compelled to take a hard look at the state of their relationship. Both have tried to cope with the situation; for Mary, that involves heavily leaning on Pastor Rob (Dan Byrd), which her husband doesn't appreciate.
In the Young Sheldon season 5 penultimate episode, George's jealousy over Mary's friendship with Pastor Rob finally boils over, causing another fight between them. After getting a call from East Texas Tech informing her that Sheldon (Iain Armitage) is struggling at school, Mary finally breaks down while Missy rushes to her mother's side to comfort her. It's the most touching moment in the Young Sheldon outing, making their future relationship more heartbreaking.
In Missy and Mary's final The Big Bang Theory appearance, the pair couldn't stop bickering, hinting at their tumultuous dynamic. While Missy was more than open to talking about her separation from her husband, Mary essentially gaslit her by implying that things between them were still salvageable. The fact that only Missy sees Mary's struggles in Young Sheldon season 5 makes it tragic that she wasn't able to give her daughter the same kind of that Sheldon's twin needed during her divorce. Instead, Mary remained fixated on Sheldon and his achievements.
As the Coopers go through the highs and lows of life in The Big Bang Theory prequel, it's becoming increasingly clear that Missy is the best character in Young Sheldon thus far. While Sheldon becomes oblivious to what's happening in their home, his twin has gone out of her way to be emotionally ive to everyone. After learning about Georgie's situation, she went up to him and genuinely offered him her . Subsequently, when a kid at Sunday School started bouthing their family, she stood up and defended them by punching him. It did get her in trouble, but it highlighted her strong sense of loyalty. Despite Mary typically ignoring her in favor of Sheldon, Missy didn't think twice about empathizing with her mother when she saw her starting to cry. Later that night, she also helped the Cooper matriarch when Sheldon and Georgie asked why George wasn't ing them for dinner.
Life for the Coopers will only get worse from here on out. The inevitable death of George is looming in Young Sheldon progresses through The Big Bang Theory's established timeline. Given Missy's close relationship with her dad, it's likely that his demise will have a significant impact on her. Hopefully, Mary steps up and gives back the emotional that her daughter will need when that time finally comes.
Young Sheldon season 5 airs Thursdays on CBS.
