Although the popular TV show Younger has a great cast, a smart premise, and many binge-worthy episodes, every series goes down some wrong directions when it comes to storylines. Whether characters are taking action that fans don't think they should or something truly strange is going on, these moments can be hard to forget (and not in a good way). With six seasons and a seventh coming soon, it's only logical that Younger has some plotlines that should never have taken place.
Keep reading to find out the 10 most unnecessary storylines on Younger.
Lauren Dates Max And Then Gets Bored Of Him
Lauren (Molly Bernard) is a fairly quirky character and she's always talking about how she's not into gender roles or traditional dating. When she meets a doctor named Max (Ben Rappaport), it's confusing to her because he's such a normal person. She never thought that she would fall for someone like him.
After dating him for a while, Lauren gets bored of him and thinks that they should split up, and this seems like such an unnecessary storyline. It's not fun watching them hang out because he doesn't have much of a personality. Lauren isn't enough of a major character to have a major romantic storyline. If she's going to date someone, it should be much more compelling.
Diana Sleeps With A Plumber In Her Building
In the season three episode "A Night At The Opera," Diana (Miriam Shor) sleeps with a plumber who is doing some work in her building. This is a completely unnecessary storyline because it's conveyed in such a silly way. Diana acts like a pre-teen who gets super flustered around the opposite sex, and since she's such a powerhouse at work, that doesn't fit her character.
It's much better to see Diana fall in love for real, as she does twice over the course of the series so far. This storyline didn't move the plot forward or help her character development since the plumber disappears (and then re-appears in a later episode, which is pretty boring, too).
Kelsey And Liza Try To Work With The Stoopid Girls
This is another unnecessary storyline from the same third season episode. Kelsey (Hilary Duff) and Liza (Sutton Foster ) try to work with YouTube stars who call themselves The Stoopid Girls. They do super silly and immature things in order to gain a following and have people pay attention to them.
It's really awkward to watch these scenes, and it makes it tough for viewers to respect Kelsey, Liza, and their Millennial imprint since who would really think that stars like that could write a book? It only makes things more awkward when one of them confesses she wrote an actual novel and wants to work on it instead. Fans pity this character and it's not a great episode.
Kelsey Has An Affair With An Author
When Kelsey has an affair with an author in the first season, it's also very awkward to watch, and since this makes her unlikeable, this is another unnecessary storyline.
Because this happens so early on in the show, it's hard to sympathize with Kelsey or think that she's a good person. This is also a bad storyline because as a young person working in book publishing, she should be making better choices and being way more professional.
Thad's Weird, Crazy Death
Thad (Dan Amboyer) isn't a great Younger and his death is super strange. He literally gets hit in the head by a construction beam and dies instantly. Fans definitely rewound that moment and watched it quite a few times in order to let the storyline sink in.
It would have been enough for Kelsey to discover that Thad was cheating on her and then break up with him. She could have realized that she shouldn't marry him. He didn't need to die in such a random and disturbing way. Because he ed away, this took the choice away from her, and it would have been more interesting to watch Kelsey come to the realization that he was a jerk on her own.
Liza Has A Crush On A Sheep Herder
In the season two episode "The Good Shepherd," Sebastian (Matthew Morrison) is an outdoors type who Liza comes across at the farmer's market. She has a huge crush on him right away and it turns out that he lives in the country and takes care of sheep. She thinks that this is cool and since she's such a literary type, this reminds her of the great "going back to the land" stories that she has read.
Things get weird and fast when she drives to his place and sees him in an intimate moment with a sheep. Yup, this really happened. It's hard not to say that this was totally unnecessary. No one wanted to see this.
Liza's Daughter Caitlin Dates A Much Older Guy
Liza's daughter Caitlin (Tessa Albertson) makes a lot of choices on the show that her mom doesn't agree with since she's young and still learning. But in the fifth season, she tells her mom that she's dating a much older guy, and it's such an unnecessary storyline.
Of course, as viewers probably guessed as soon as Liza learned this information, Caitlin ended up crying over this person because it didn't work out. It's even worse that he's a teacher. Cailin may be young and naive but she should know better.
Diana Wants To Quit After Learning Liza's Secret
In the season six premiere "Big Day," Diana wants to quit because she has learned the secret that Liza has been keeping. But even though it makes sense that she would be pissed off that Liza lied about her age, Diana would never, ever want to leave Empirical.
This is an unnecessary storyline because it's such a confusing and unrealistic one. Diana considers this company her home and since she has always been married to her job, she has never considered any part of her life more important than her job. She would never actually do this.
A Celebrity Refuses To Hand Over Her Memoir
In the season five episode "Sex, Liza and Rock & Roll," singer Chrissie Hart won't hand over her memoir to Liza and Charles (Peter Herrmann). This is another unnecessary storyline because it doesn't make any sense. Charles acts like he has no clue what to do, but if he's been working in publishing since forever, wouldn't he know how to handle difficult authors and people with strong creative personalities?
It's also just silly because of course a celebrity would want to get their memoir out as soon as possible so people could read it and it could get published. She really has no reason to act like this.
Josh And Clare's Marriage And Baby
It's cute when Josh (Nico Tortorella) starts dating Clare (Phoebe Dynevor) but when they get married after a super brief amount of time because she's from Ireland and she wants to stay in New York, it's awkward to watch. It's even worse when they want Liza to be involved because she can help their green card wedding seem legit.
While this is a rough storyline for fans to get on board with, it's made even worse when Clare tells Josh that she's pregnant with his baby. No one wants to see Josh settle down with someone who isn't Liza because the Josh/Liza/Charles love triangle is such a big part of the series.
