The iconic Whomp’s Fortress from new generation of gaming consoles have to offer, others have taken a step back in time instead. Clever modders have combined two of Nintendo’s most famous franchises, Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, to make something that is both new and creative, while also being wholly nostalgic.

The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario are synonymous with Nintendo. They have a vast appeal, to new gamers as well as those more experienced. Mario and friends recently celebrated their 35th anniversary, an occasion that was commemorated with the rerelease of some of the franchise's most popular games. Meanwhile, the latest entry into Hyrule lore is yet to be expanded upon bar its tantalizingly ominous trailer released at E3 2019, which simply stated that a sequel to Breath of the Wild is in development. Even with the release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, fans of Nintendo’s open world masterpiece are still keen for more.

One modder has now released a new (unofficial) DLC trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Taking inspiration from Super Mario 64, Waikuteru has recreated Whomp’s Fortress in the style of Nintendo’s open world epic, entitled the Throwback Expansion. Players see protagonist Link as he scales the vertical course to collect star fragments and red coins - all while battling pesky bokoblins. As Link negotiates sliding wall s and sloping inclines, fans of The Legend of Zelda will recognize key features from Breath of the Wild scattered throughout the level, including a cooking pot and the electric blue of the in-game shrines. This significant color is not the only electric element within the new mod, though. Unlike in Super Mario 64, the weather acts in an unpredictable manner during the DLC gameplay, as it does in Breath of the Wild. The result of this fickle climate; brave Link is soon struck down by lightening and given a Game Over.

This is not the first time that Waikuteru has created a Legend of Zelda inspired mod. The talented designer also recently added a battle through a remade Bob-Omb’s Battlefield, with the famous plains being covered in Deku Scrubs and treasure chests.

Unlike previous mods, Nintendo has not yet brought down its heavy hand and removed Waikuteru’s Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Super Mario 64 DLC video from YouTube. Nintendo recently decided to block all soundtracks from their most popular titles from YouTube. This is a disappointing choice from Nintendo, as many fans enjoy the memories associated with these illustrious melodies. Sadly for gaming fans, this fun video may not be long for this world.
