The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's titular character, Princess Zelda, is one of the main focuses of the game; however, she is not the best princess in BOTW. Link's main goal in Breath of the Wild is to fight Ganon at Hyrule Castle where Zelda has been holding him off for 100 years. Along the way, players learn of another princess who helped Link and Zelda in their fight against Ganon - Mipha.

Mipha was the princess of the Zora realm prior to Link's long sleep and was also Zora's champion. Through cutscenes in Breath of the Wild, Mipha is shown to be very kind, a bit quiet, and extremely caring. During the Great Calamity, Mipha succumbed to the Waterblight Ganon in Vah Ruta, one of the four in-game Divine Beasts, although many others were designed. Her spirit helps Link navigate through Vah Ruta and after Link defeats the Waterblight Ganon, she gives Link her healing power, known as Mipha's Grace.

When it comes to the princesses in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mipha is without a doubt far superior to Zelda, especially when it comes to Link. This is not to say that Zelda is not a heroic character in the series. However, as the player learns more about Link's past through his recovered memories, it's easy to see the difference between the two princesses.

Why Mipha Is One Of Breath Of The Wild's Best Characters

Mipha, Zelda, and Link in Legend of Zelda

Link's recovered memories of Zelda, who hasn't aged in 100 years, often show Zelda in despair or full of frustration, which does make sense given her situation. However, she often takes this anger out on Link, especially at the beginning of their story. While she eventually warms up to Link, Zelda has her own destiny to focus on. Link's memories of Mipha, however, both recounted from the recovered memories and from Mipha's diary, are wholesome and full of love.

Mipha and Link met when Link was a child and their friendship grew from there. Years later, Mipha became champion of the Zora, the fish-like race in the Zelda series, and Link became Hyrule's Champion and they did not see each other for many years. When they are reunited on Vah Ruta, Mipha tells Link that she will always protect him. Players also learn during Breath of the Wild that Mipha made a set of Zora armor specifically for Link, which, according to Zora custom, is made by a Zora princess for her future husband or someone she loved.

From what players see of Mipha, she is wholesome, kind, and protective of Link. She sacrificed herself in order to try to save Hyrule and gifts Link her healing powers when he returns. Mipha's kindness and strength make her the superior princess in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, both in general and when it comes to Link. Players will have to wait for the game's sequel to find out if Zelda can replace Mipha as the top princess.
