The title will take on a different approach from the previous entry, namely Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The new game, which had not been discussed or even teased before, will arrive later this year and several of its gameplay elements have also been shown with the event's reveal.

Shown during the recent Direct event, which was broadcast on the official Nintendo channel on YouTube, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will put players in control of Princess Zelda as she tries to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of her loyal guardian, Link. As can be seen in the trailer, the game should start with Link arriving to rescue the Princess and, after successfully doing so, he is pulled into a portal and disappears. Zelda then takes on the protagonist's role and must find the missing warrior.

In addition to the plot and the gameplay elements, the trailer reveals that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will arrive on September 26 for Nintendo Switch consoles.

Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom's Reveal Hints At New Gameplay Possibilities

The Titular Princess Will Use New Abilities

Zelda and Tri look happy in Echoes of Wisdom.

As was seen in the Nintendo Direct presentation, Zelda will receive help from a fairy called Tri and, with it, use the staff known as the Tri-Rod. This special staff will allow the Princess to create Echoes, which are copies of other objects. This will be key during her adventure, as this playable Zelda will use these Echoes to traverse Hyrule in search of Link and solve many of the puzzles that impede her progress through the region. An example of the mechanic's usage can be seen in the Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer.

There, the character recreates Echoes of tables to gain enough height to climb a wall. Players will be encouraged to use their creativity when exploiting the Echoes they gather throughout the campaign. Players can avoid a gust of wind by either skipping over it with a box as a platform, for instance, or even blocking the gust entirely with a shrub. In addition to these mundane objects that should help with traversal and even combat, Zelda will be able to create Echoes of monsters in Echoes of Wisdom.

In the trailer, Zelda is seen defeating an opponent by throwing an Echo rock at them.

When summoned, these Echo monsters will fight alongside the Princess and can help her defeat other threats. Nintendo promises there will be many Echoes to encounter in the game, which could significantly impact how players tackle different challenges in the game, as it seems that puzzles have different types of solutions, for example.

Zelda: TOTK Is Still Missing One Important Feature (& It’s Never Getting It)

Tears of the Kingdom is a great sequel to Breath of the Wild, but it’ll always be missing this one important feature from its predecessor.

This is not the first time that Zelda is playable within the franchise (she is playable in Hyrule Warriors, for instance), but her time in the limelight is minimal. In fact, the absence of a playable Zelda in Tears of the Kingdom was a missed opportunity, especially when considering where her story arc goes and how important it is to Link's adventure. Even if it is a spin-off, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a huge step forward for the Princess and should be able to show just how endearing the character is apart from her silent companion.
