put players in the shoes of the Princess of Hyrule - and since its release it's been incredibly well-loved by players. Utilizing the art style of the Link's Awakening remake for the Nintendo Switch, Echoes of Wisdom follows Zelda as she works to single-handedly free Link, the King, and other Hyrulians from the mysterious rifts appearing all over the land, using her magic as her key tool.
Though the game has been well-received by fans new and old of the franchise, there's one specific issue players have taken with it. As Zelda progresses through her journey, she'll unlock various Echoes to problem-solve the various obstacles and take down enemies in her path - but players were quick to note that the UI for this feature repeated a mistake made in Tears of the Kingdom.
Echoes Of Wisdom Players Don't Like The Horizontal List For Zelda's Echoes
This UI Feature Was Also Controversial In Tears Of The Kingdom
There are more than 120 different Echoes for Zelda to unlock as she progresses through her journey to save Hyrule, some of which receive more powerful versions later in the game. To access these Echoes, the player has to press the right d-pad button, bringing up a horizontal list of all of the ones Zelda has currently learned. With the sheer number available in the game, this often results in some serious scroll time to find the one a player needs.
Though this horizontal list wasn't particularly cumbersome for certain features, like switching a sword or shield in TOTK, players complained when the same interface tool was used for items. In the BOTW sequel, players could fuse an item to their arrow by pressing the up button on the d-pad while aiming with the bow. As there were hundreds of unique items to collect, though, players often found themselves scrolling through a long, horizontal list to locate the exact one they wanted.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom - How To Unlock All Automatons
There are six automatons in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and you'll need to go on an Echo hunt to unlock them all with Dampe's help.
"I am only a couple hours in and I have a feeling scrolling through the horizontal list of every Echo is going to eat up a ton of my time and patience," Reddit GameMaster366 griped in a post. "The single saving grace is that it auto-sorts by 'most used' but that isn't a real solution. No way to 'favorite?' No way to only view one category?"
Other Echoes Of Wisdom Players Report Mixing Up The D-Pad Controls
Pressing The Up Button On The D-Pad Transforms Zelda
The horizontal list isn't the only issue players have with this UI feature; though Nintendo attempted to differentiate between the two games by using the right d-pad button for the Echoes, muscle memory from playing Tears of the Kingdom has resulted in players accidentally transforming into Zelda's swordfighting form instead. "My bigger problem is I keep hitting up on the d-pad open the menu like ToTK and transforming," Reddit thecideowlinn shared in a comment.
Though it's not necessarily a game-breaking mechanic, it's definitely one that has resulted in a learning curve for seasoned Zelda players. However, there is a workaround to this frequent mix-up. Holding the L button or pressing the plus will also bring up the list of Echoes in Echoes of Wisdom, offering an alternative for those trying to avoid frequent misclicks on the d-pad. These alternatives don't appear to be explained anywhere in the game, though, so they wouldn't be obvious alternatives.
Echoes of Wisdom has been a standout release from Nintendo in what's assumed to be the final year of the Nintendo Switch's lifespan before the next-generation console is announced, but every new fan-favorite comes with its caveats. Considering players complained online about the unnecessary scroll time needed to parse through a horizontal list with Tears of the Kingdom, some aren't particularly pleased with this repeated UI feature - but for others, it's not enough to stop them from enjoying the game.
